Friday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 57-72
We haven't talked about Betts much this season, but he is in the midst of a six-game hitting streak. During that stretch, he has an extra-base hit in three games, which bodes well for him entering Friday night.
Against Reds' starter Brandon Williamson, Betts is 1-3 with a home run. Against the current Reds' pitching staff, he has 12 hits, half of which have gone for extra bases. Williamson has only given up seven hits in his last two starts, but he is susceptible to the long ball. Two starts ago, he allowed the Giants to go deep twice. With Betts sitting on 27 home runs this season, this could be a nightmare matchup for Williamson.
Maybe this is a "too-good-to-be-true" play, but this line makes no sense. Scherzer has struck out at least six in his last seven starts. In his only appearance against the Nationals this season, he struck out six in 5.0 innings.
For his career, Scherzer has struck out the current Nationals lineup 23 times in 74 at-bats. With how he has been pitching and with his success against one of the worst teams in baseball, we'd take this line up to 6.5.
Giolito is coming off a nine-strikeout performance against the Twins. However, just about every pitcher in baseball has had success striking out the Twins' batters this season. Prior to that performance, Giolito had not struck out more than six batters since June 28.
In his only start against the Blue Jays this season, Giolito struck out just four in 6.0 innings. The Blue Jays are one of the toughest teams in baseball to strike out. So, even if Giolito has a better game tonight, it's unlikely he will find three more strikeouts against this lineup.
