This Season: 88-93
The Kansas City Royals are right in the middle of the league when it comes to total strikeouts. Without much experience against the lineup, it's not surprising to see Javier's number so low ahead of this game. However, this number should be higher because of what Javier has done recently.
In August, Javier couldn't strike anyone out. In five starts, he never struck out more than five batters. Yet, in September, he has struck out at least five in both his starts, which is much more in line with what he was doing over the summer. He hasn't been consistent by any means, but he's a streaky pitcher who is hot right now.
Alonso is in the midst of a three-game hitting streak. He has also hit a double in each of his last two games. While he's only batting .226 for the season, this current hot streak is favorable for his over tonight, especially when considering the pitcher he is facing.
Alonso is 1-3 in his career against the Reds' Hunter Greene, and that one hit was a home run. Greene has given up 14 home runs in 91.1 innings this season. Considering Alonso has blasted 44 homers this year, he may go yard again tonight. Even if he doesn't, we like his hitting streak to continue against a pitcher that gives up extra-base hits.
Considering what Nola did against this Cardinals' lineup in late August, it's surprising this number is so low. He struck out nine batters in 7.0 innings, giving up just one hit in the process. The Cardinals are 21st in the MLB in total strikeouts, but even if Nola pitches worse than his last appearance against them, he could still easily hit six strikeouts.
His career numbers against the Cardinals are solid. He's struck out 27 in 98 at-bats, and he's only allowing a batting average of .173. Nola has struck out at least five batters in his last 12 starts and at least six in 10 of those outings. That's the consistency you want when taking an over. If Nola misses this, he will miss by half of a strikeout. Therefore, we definitely recommend the over.
