Friday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 113-88-7
The biggest problem with Jacob deGrom is that he simply isn't pitching enough innings. He's racked up nine strikeouts in his two starts, but he didn't pitch more than 3.2 innings in either contest. He's only allowed one run thus far, so it's not a matter of him being pulled because he's getting shelled. Rather, he's on a pitch count as the Rangers look towards the future.
Both of deGrom's starts were against the Seattle Mariners, the most strikeout-prone team in baseball. Even though the Angels are also a strikeout-prone team, they're less likely to make things easy for deGrom. If he pitches fewer than 4.0 innings again, he simply won't face enough batters to hit the more than on this line.
This season, Brady Singer has struck out 165 batters in 173.2 innings. He's struck out six batters in back-to-back starts and he's struck out at least five in seven of his last nine.
The Braves have the 11th-most strikeouts of any team this season. Because of that, Singer has an advantage over them tonight. Additionally, Singer has struck out 11 Braves in 32 at-bats throughout his career. The lineup has managed to get quite a few hits off of him, so there's always the chance they chase him early, but Singer has pitched at least 5.0 innings in 12 consecutive starts.
Juan Soto has never faced Pirates starter Jared Jones. However, in his last start, Jones allowed six hits and six runs in 5.0 innings against the Cincinnati Reds. He's allowed 101 hits in 117.1 innings this season.
Soto is in the midst of a three-game hitting streak and he's hit safely in five of his last six. The reason to back him tonight instead of another Yankees hitter is because his total bases line is set at 0.5. Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge each have their number set at 1.5. While they could both clear that number, Soto's simply the safer play in a favorable matchup.
