Tuesday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Plays
This Season: 90-68-6
Bailey Ober has struck out 140 batters in 134 innings this season. He's struck out at least six in three of his last four starts. Since mid-June, Ober has struck out at least five batters in nine of his 11 starts. And yet, we're still taking his less than tonight.
The Padres have the fewest strikeouts and best batting average in the MLB. Ober has pitched at least 6.0 innings in 10 consecutive starts. While that would normally be enough time for him to hit five strikeouts, against the Padres, he will likely need to go deeper into the game. And with how good the Padres have been at the plate this season, Ober may be in for his shortest start since early June.
Tyler Anderson faced the Royals earlier this season and struck out four batters in 6.2 innings. He has struck out just 14 Royals in 85 tries in his career. Additionally, the Royals have the second-fewest strikeouts in the league this season. With all of this in mind, it's hard to see how he's ever going to hit the more than tonight.
Anderson has struck out 117 batters in 147.1 innings this season. While he has struck out at least seven batters in back-to-back starts, this number is still too high when all factors are taken into account. Anderson has struggled to reach 6.0 innings this season. If that is the case tonight, he has no shot at even pushing here. Considering the Royals are sixth in the league in runs scored and team batting average, Anderson is in for a short night.
Ryan McMahon is having an abysmal August at the plate. He's batting just .102 for the month, as he's recorded just five hits in 14 games. While this type of slump would cause many to shy away from McMahon, we're going to play the averages and look for him to finally get right tonight.
McMahon faces DJ Herz. He's 0-for-2 in his career against the young pitcher. But Herz is far from unhittable. He has allowed 53 hits in 55.0 innings. He's consistently allowed runs and hits in each of his starts, even if he hasn't fallen victim to a horrible appearance thus far. McMahon will have opportunities tonight. We expect him to have success at least once. After all, his slump can't go on forever.
