This Season: 90-94
Since joining the Astros, Justin Verlander has struck out five or more in five of his eight games. Two of his outings of four or less came against the Yankees, while the other came in a 12-5 win over the Miami Marlins.
Tonight, Verlander faces a team tied for 20th in the league in total strikeouts. While the Orioles could give Verlander some trouble, his history suggests that five strikeouts are well within reach. He has struck out this lineup 24 times in 88 at-bats. Additionally, Verlander is hot right now, as he has struck out 13 in his last two starts.
Adam Wainwright has struggled this season. The Cardinals have lost seven of his last eight starts, and even when they did win, he only struck out three. He has struck out three or fewer batters in five of his last six games. If you look at an even larger grouping of games, he has struck out fewer than four batters in 15 of his last 17.
When you look at his career numbers against the Milwaukee Brewers, there is no reason to feel that he will be ringing up batters tonight. He has struck out just 38 in 163 at-bats. To hit this over, Wainwright may have to pitch 7.0 innings, something he hasn't done once this season.
Jordan Montgomery has struck out a combined nine batters in his last three games. While he had a very solid strikeout run back in early August, ringing up at least five batters in four consecutive games, he's had a tough time in his last four starts.
Tonight, Montgomery faces a Red Sox lineup that is 19th in the league in total strikeouts. That in itself isn't a reason to take his under, but his previous history against the Red Sox is. He has struck out just 14 batters in 91 at-bats. That's just one batter in every 6.5 at-bats.
