The San Diego Padres are great at avoiding strikeouts, so well that they're seventh-best in the league in total strikeouts. Tonight, they face a pitcher who isn't known for striking out many batters, so they should continue their success with contact hitting.
However, this number is too low for Logan Webb. He has struck out four or more in five consecutive, and 10 of his last 11. He hasn't faced the Padres this season, but he has struck out the current lineup 22 times in his career. Webb has pitched at least 6.0 innings in nine of his last 11. With the ability to go deep into this game, Webb will need less than one strikeout per inning to hit this.
This line used to be a guaranteed over for Justin Verlander. However, this season, he has seen his strikeouts per inning decrease significantly. Going against the Mariners' lineup, he should be able to get that number up tonight.
The Mariners have the second-most total strikeouts in the league. Verlander may not look like his former self, but he has struck out at least seven batters in three of his last six starts. He will need to go at least 6.0 innings to have a shot at this tonight. However, he has pitched that deep into a game in four straight starts.
Marcus Semien is batting .277 on the season, and he has hit safely in six of his last eight games. Last night, he was 2-4 with two home runs, a performance that broke a two-game hitless streak.
Semien gets a good matchup tonight against Patrick Sandoval. He is 3-8 against him in his career, and he has two extra-base hits. He has only struck out once against Sandoval, so he should put the ball in play tonight. When he does, at least one ball will fall for a hit.
