Tuesday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 20-23-3
It's a little surprising to see this number set where it is, considering what Cade Povich has done this season. He has struck out more than four batters just twice. Though he has struck out exactly four batters twice, he also has two games with two strikeouts. So, in six starts, he's struck out four or fewer batters four times. Yet, for some reason, he's being given the benefit of the doubt against the team with the 12th-fewest strikeouts in the league.
Povich doesn't have much history against this Twins' lineup, but he has only allowed one hit in 13 at-bats. However, as impressive as that is, he has also only struck out one batter in those at-bats. Though the Twins are just 19th in runs scored this season, Povich has an ERA of 5.16. Because of how many runs he's allowed, Povich has been chased before finishing five innings four times. Look for that to happen again tonight.
Emerson Hancock has struck out at least four batters in three consecutive games. On April 23rd, he struck out seven Boston Red Sox. However, that performance is hardly indicative of what to expect tonight, as the Red Sox have the second-most strikeouts in the league, while the Athletics have the fifth-fewest. All three of Hancock's starts with four or more strikeouts have come against teams that rank in the top seven in the league in total strikeouts.
Hancock has managed to pitch at least five innings in three of his four appearances this season, despite racking up an ERA of 6.62. He's allowed at least five hits and two earned runs in every game. The Athletics rank in the middle of the league in runs scored, so they may not be able to chase Hancock early. But history shows it doesn't matter how deep Hancock pitches in this game. In 18 at-bats against the Athletics' lineup, he has struck out just three batters.
Shohei Ohtani is batting .278 against Marlins starter Cal Quantrill. While he's yet to hit a home run, two of his five hits have been doubles. Ohtani enters this game on a three-game hitting streak, and he's hit safely in eight of his last nine. He's topped 1.5 total bases in six of those eight games.
Quantrill has had a rough start to the season. He's given up 38 hits in 26.2 innings, including five home runs. He's allowed at least four hits in all six of his starts, and he's given up at least four earned runs in four of his six appearances. Ohtani is about to face a worse version of Quantrill than he's used to. Since he's hot, I'll take Ohtani to clear this number, potentially in the first inning.
