Tuesday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 96-70-6
Logan Gilbert has been fairly solid this year with a WHIP of 0.91 and 162 strikeouts in 165.2 innings. But this number is about 1.5 strikeouts higher than it should be. Gilbert has struck out seven or fewer batters in five consecutive games. While he has struck out more than seven on numerous occasions this season, he has never struck out 10. Therefore, his ceiling is nine, which is just 1.5 more than this.
Gilbert has some history against the Rays, striking out six batters in 22 attempts. The Rays have the fifth-most strikeouts in the league, but Gilbert's current ratio isn't good enough to hit this number unless he pitches more than eight innings. He hasn't done that this season. Even if he pitches well for 7.0 innings, Gilbert has struck out more than seven batters just once in the last four games where he has pitched that deep into the contest.
Miles Mikolas has only struck out 99 batters in 144 innings. He has struck out three or fewer in seven of his last eight starts. Tonight, he faces the least strikeout-prone team in the league. While he did face them at the beginning of the season and struck out four, we expect the Padres to make contact in nearly all of their at-bats tonight.
Mikolas has struck out just 12 Padres in 75 chances. That's an average of one strikeout for every 6.25 batters faced. This means Mikolas won't come remotely close to striking out one batter per inning. He will likely need to pitch six innings just to have a shot at pushing. He's only pitched six innings in one of his last four starts. In two of those starts, he only pitched four. Look for him to get chased early again tonight.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has recorded two hits in each of his last two games. Three of his four hits during that span have been for extra bases. He's batting .320 for the season and .367 for August. This month, he has 29 hits, 16 of which have gone for extra bases.
Guerrero doesn't have very good numbers against Cooper Criswell. He's only faced the Red Sox pitcher four times and has just one single and three strikeouts in those at-bats. Still, with the way he's been hitting, the more than is the right play. Plus, Criswell has allowed 85 hits in 79.2 innings, so it's just a matter of time before Guerrero gets the best of him.
