Wednesday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
MLB PrizePicks Record This Season: 49-41-3
Robbie Ray More Than 4.5 Strikeouts
Robbie Ray is coming off Tommy John surgery but had a month-long build-up process in the Minors. He threw 78 pitches in his final tune-up, striking out seven across 5.1 innings of work. He should be in line to throw around 85 to 90 pitches in this one. Asking for five strikeouts out of the 2021 AL Cy Young isn’t much, considering he has a career 11.03 K/9. He also has faired well against this Dodgers roster in the past, at least in terms of strikeouts. They have a 29.4% K% across 194 plate appearances against him.
Tyler Glasnow Less Than 7.5 Strikeouts
Tyler Glasnow also makes his return to the mound in the same game, taking on the Giants. This will be his first start since July 5th. Unlike Ray, he did not go through a rehab assignment. Instead, he threw a 58-pitch, three-inning simulated game last Friday. He shouldn’t be expected to go more than five innings here. The Dodgers are notorious for being cautious with their starter, so I’d guess they have a pitch count of around 75 for him. Even for Glasnow, striking out eight with that sort of pitch count will be extremely difficult, so let’s take the less than here. In his last start against the Giants, Glasnow had his worst start of the season, finding just one strikeout across three innings while allowing seven hits and five earned runs.
Luis Casttilo More Than 5.5 Strikeouts
The strikeout rate has taken a dip this season, but Luis Castillo is still an elite starter in the league. He ranks in the top 71st percentile in K% and 74th percentile in swinging strike rate as well. Castillo has drawn plenty of difficult strikeout matchups on the season, playing a part in why he hasn’t gone over this line as frequently as we are used to seeing from him. He finished with five strikeouts across six shutout innings against the Angels when he last faced them, but only threw 86 pitches. Seattle was up 11-0 through six innings, so they didn’t bother putting him out there for the seventh. The Halos’ roster has a 26% K% across 131 plate appearances against him.
