Friday’s Best MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 218-132 (62.3%)
The Rangers are out of anything to play for, but deGrom still looks like the guy we knew. After not pitching for nearly two years, he has showcased typical deGrom-like stuff, despite pitch counts of 58 and 60. Hopefully, they let him work a smidge deeper in this one, and even if he doesn’t, he has a solid shot of getting over this line facing the Angels. They are fourth in K% (26.7%) and 29th in wRC+ (70) against righties over the past 30 days.
This is another phenomenal matchup for a starter who can rack up the punchouts. Carlos Rodon faces the Pirates, who have the third-worst K% (28.8%) against lefties since the start of August. Nine of the past 13 left-handed starters to take on Pittsburgh have exceeded this line. Rodon himself has in eight of his last 13 starts, and 18-of-31 overall on the year. The Yankees are still vying for the number one seed in the American League, with a one-game lead over the Guardians.
There’s a decent chance the Astros might limit Blanco in this one. The Astros are locked into their seed and will have to play in the Wild Card round, so they’ll want their top arms as fresh as can be. Blanco has pitched great this year, and typically would have no issue going over this line; however, given the circumstances, and taking on the Guardians, it’ll be a difficult task. Cleveland has Stephen Kwan back in the lineup, which gives them one of the more strikeout-averse lineups in the game. They are 27th in K% (19.9%) against righties on the season.
