Sunday's Best MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Kyle Schwarber Over 1.5 Total Bases (1.94x)
Kyle Schwarber has smacked a .287 ISO and wOBA of .352 against his last 510 righties faced.
Today, he’ll take on Nick Nastrini, who has already allowed his first eight lefties of the year to hit a .429 ISO and .460 wOBA.
Schwarber has hit more fly balls than ground balls against righties over the last two seasons and has hit 70.1% of hard contact with a 16.2% barrel percentage.
Let’s take a chance with Schwarber today.
Martin Perez Under 2.5 Earned Runs (1.96x)
A change of scenery for Martin Perez has really helped him elevate his game.
Perez still has low strikeouts. He’s only added 15.5% of strikeouts per game this season. Still, Perez has held walks to 6.8% and has limited opponents to a .084 ISO and wOBA of .291 with more than 45% of ground balls and just 19% of fly balls.
Perez is a lefty who will be in line to take on a Red Sox offense that has been absolutely terrible against lefties since last season. The projected lineup, without Rafael Devers and Trison Casas, has hit a .092 ISO and wOBA of .276 with 29.1% strikeouts and 6.1% walks.
On paper, the lineup looks absolutely dreadful against lefties. So we’ll take Perez to go Under 2.5 earned runs today.
Luis Gil Over 2.5 Walks (1.44x)
Luis Gil has been really good for the Yankees, except he’s walked 23% of batters to begin the season.
All of his other stats have been enticing. He’s limited ISO to .067 and wOBA to .276. He’s also limited fly balls to 15.4%. Yet, he can’t keep the walks down.
The Rays’ projected lineup includes five batters who have walked at least 9.3% of the time against righties since last year. The Rays are very analytical and know exactly what they have to do to get on base today.
It’s all about being patient and letting Gil hurt himself. Let’s grab the Over 2.5 Walks for Gil today.
Louie Varland Over 6.5 Ks (1.96x)
Louie Varland has struck out 25.6% of lefties to begin the season. While his strikeout rate has dropped since last season, he’s been consistent against lefties from last year.
That said, the Tigers have struck out 27.2% of the time against righties since last season as well. Detroit only has one hitter who has struck out under 23.9% of the time against righties. The Tigers also have more lefties than righties in the lineup, and those five lefties have struck out 29.2% of the time against righties.
Varland hasn’t been perfect. He might give up some runs, but his outs will mostly come from strikeouts. Take his Over.
