MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 128-81 (61.2%)
The Mariners are in San Diego for a West Coast interleague series this week. That should lead to plenty of strikeouts for Padres pitchers. The Mariners have the worst K% (30.6%) and are 19th in wRC+ (96) facing righties over the past 30 days. The last 12 right-handed starters to face them have recorded at least six strikeouts and nine of them had at least eight. Michael King ranks in the top 87th percentile in K% and 96th in CSW% amongst all starters, so he should have no issues finding seven punchouts in this one.
We have been burned on back-to-back starts from Zach Eflin, but that changes today. This line has sat at 0.5 for the vast majority of the year. He has allowed two late free passes in each of his past two starts. Ahead of this outing, his line has moved to 1.5, however. Eflin ranks in the 99th percentile in BB% and has stayed under this mark in 15 of his 16 starts this season. Taking on the Yankees will likely lead to at least one walk, but I doubt another one comes through. Their offense has been pretty weak lately.
We’re rolling with a rarified hitter prediction to close things out today. Pete Alonso has incredible numbers facing Patrick Corbin, so it only feels right to target him in this spot. Alonso is 15-for-46 with three doubles and five dingers against him, good for a .478 xwOBA. He hits the cover off the ball against him and so do his teammates around him. The Grimace Mets have been scorching hot at the plate, especially against lefties, as of late. Since the start of June, they have a 162 wRC+ (second-best) when facing southpaws.
