NFL Preseason Week 1 Picks & Predictions

Falcons vs. Dolphins

During his time as a head coach, Falcons HC Raheem Morris has not put much emphasis on preseason games (5-7 SU and 5-7 ATS). But first-year head coaches often like to put their best foot forward in their first game on the sideline. Don’t expect to roll out any starters for more than a series or two, but if they can win in the fourth quarter, he’ll try to make it happen. But don’t expect the same from Dolphins head coach Mike McDonald. He knows he has a playoff-caliber team, so he will focus on not losing anyone essential and finding a diamond in the rough. A win will be nice, but don’t expect him to push for it.

Pick: Falcons -2.5 (-110)

Texans vs. Steelers

DeMeco Ryans went through the “I have something to prove” stage last year as a first-year head coach (2-1 SU and 2-1 ATS). Thanks to the Hall of Fame game last week, we have a good idea of his approach to preseason games: no superstars on the field, and get out healthy. However, the Steelers may put more emphasis on winning. The Steelers have gone 40-24 SU and 36-27- ATS under Mike Tomlin. While we will not see Russell Wilson this week, we will probably see Justin Fields for a few series. That may be all they need to get ahead and stay ahead. Houston is favored, but look for the Steelers to win this one outright at home.

Pick: Steelers ML (+124)

Eagles vs. Ravens

Eagles head coach Nick Siriani puts very little importance on winning preseason games. During his short time with the Eagles, the team has gone 1-6-2 SU and 2-6- ATS. He focuses on keeping his stars safe and finding roster depth in preseason games. We will definitely not see Lamar Jackson, Derek Henry, or anyone else of significance. As for the Ravens, we can’t say for certain that John Harbaugh is big on winning meaningless preseason games, but his record does. During his tenure, the Ravens have gone 44-14 SU and 40-18 ATS. Last year saw their 24-preseason game-winning streak come to an end. We like the depth on Philadelphia’s roster more than Baltimore’s, but Harbaugh’s record does not lie.

Pick: Ravens ML (+105)
