(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)
Connecticut Sun at Chicago Sky
After a strong start to the season, the Sky have fallen back down to earth. They're losers of five straight with five losses against the spread (ATS), including a game on Tuesday where they were favored over the Mystics and lost by 18 points. The reason they've struggled is a putrid effective field-goal rate (eFG%) and being in the bottom third of the league in both offensive and defensive rebounding rate.
Connecticut is a team that is every bit as bad as the Sky, especially on the offensive end. They don't shoot well, they don't get to the free-throw line and they don't take care of the ball. They do rebound the ball well, which will give them plenty of opportunity to get second-chance points and keep this game close.
The Sun have struggled mightily on the defensive end all season. They allow 1.11 points per possession, but Chicago isn't the kind of offense that is going to take advantage of that. This is a matchup that seems to favor the Sky, but you cannot trust this offense enough with the amount of points that they're laying. I'll be taking the big underdog.
Pick: Sun +7.5 (-115)
Dallas Wings at Los Angeles Sparks
If you like offense, this is the game for you. These are two of the most exciting offenses in the league. This might seem like an easy over at first glance, but a deeper look at the numbers indicates the under may be the better play.
Los Angeles is a team that excels at scoring points. Their field-goal rate ranks third in the league. However, their biggest Achilles heel is turning the ball over.
Because of this, they rank second-to-last in the league with just 81 field-goal attempts per 100 possessions. Against a team that likes to play at a fast tempo, that could spell a lot of points, but not against Dallas.
The Wings have slowed things down, being led by Paige Bueckers. Early returns indicate that this pace suits them. They've managed a 6-3 straight up (SU) record to start the season, but are only 3-6 to the over because sportsbooks haven't quite caught up yet.
The matchup between the team with the second-best offensive rating and the team with the worst defensive rating suggests Dallas will score a lot in this game, and I like them to cover. However, the pace will be slow enough, and the Sparks will blow scoring opportunities enough with turnovers, that the under is also very much in play in this matchup of big names.
Picks: Under 178.5 Points (-110) & Wings -1.5 (-105)
