#11 New Mexico vs. #6 Clemson

It will be interesting to see which teams control the pace of this game. New Mexico loves to push the tempo, as they average 72.8 possessions per game, ranking 8th highest in the country. Meanwhile, Clemson averages 66 possessions per game (260th).
I think Clemson would be OK playing fast in this matchup, as New Mexico ranks 22nd in adjusted defensive efficiency per Kenpom. Getting a few quick buckets before New Mexico settles in on defense may be the way to go. Enter Joseph Girard III. He is one of the better 3-point shooters in the country. Girard III must hit a few big shots against this stingy defense to keep up with New Mexico.
On the other hand, senior guard Jamal Mashburn should have plenty of opportunities to get up and go above his point total. Yes, he only averaged 10.5 points per game during the Mountain West Tournament, but three of the four teams he faced ranked inside the top 30 of Kenpom’s defensive metrics. Clemson ranks 66th, so this should be a much easier matchup.
Give me the Lobos, as they are playing some of their best basketball of the season. After winning the Mountain West Championship, Kenpom has them as the 21st-best team country, which should equate to a 6-seed rather than an 11-seed.

I can see this Cougars team coming out on a mission after losing to Iowa State by 20+ points in the Big 12 Championship game.
The Longwood Lancers don’t have many positives to write about, which makes me think they will have a hard time defending this Houston offense. Out of 360 teams, Longwood ranks 238th in defending the 3-point shot and 205th in defending inside the arc. L.J. Cryer, Jamal Shead and Emanuel Sharp should have a field day.
