Citizen Bull's Derby chances looked a lot better before he ran an uninspired Santa Anita Derby. On top of that CB has now drawn the dreaded rail and will have no choice but to fire out of the gate and try for the early lead. If he can't get it, he will likely be trapped between the rail and the pack.

All that said, by all accounts CB is training well and has impressed with his breezes this week. He is the reigning 2-year old champ for a reason and he will try to become the first such champion to win the Derby since Nyquist in 2016.

The Derby will tell us if Baffert was right about CB being in less than ideal shape at Santa Anita, or if he just isn't the 3-year old we thought he would be. I think there is too much working against him with positioning for him to win, it would take a perfect trip and I don't know if Martin Garcia can find it.

No horse has won from Post 1 since Ferdinand in 1986 and in the last 25 years only one horse from Post 1 has even finished as high as thid. Pass.
