Here’s an early look at College Football Week 9 spreads and totals, along with my projections. We’ll run through significant injuries affecting spreads and hit on games you might want to consider betting early in the week due to expected line movement.
Check out Thor Nystrom's Week 9 College Football Power Rankings >>
In the box below are my adjusted spreads for this weekend's games. ATL stands for "Adjusted Thor Line." Spreads are from the home team’s perspective, i.e., a negative number means the home team is favored. In the value column, a negative number indicates points of value on the spread for the home team, while a positive number indicates points value on the away team. ATT stands for "Adjusted Thor Total." Projected totals are based on 2021 data and do not account for personnel or schematic changes (i.e., bring that with you to your handicap)
2022: 45-40-2 ATS (52.9%) | 2014-2021: 706-620-17 ATS (53.2%)

Coaching News
Rice (-16.5) vs. Charlotte
ATL: Rice -14.4
Charlotte fired HC Will Healy following Saturday's 34-15 loss to Florida International. The setback dropped Charlotte to 1-7, including 0-4 record in Conference USA. Healy's tenure ends on a four-game losing streak.
Healy went 15-24 over three-plus seasons. His high-water mark came in his first season, a 7-6 2019 campaign that ended with a loss to Buffalo in the Bahamas Bowl. Things started to go askew after that. Charlotte went 2-12 in Healy's last 14 games after going 13-10 in his first 23.
Healy's head-coaching career began at 30 at Austin Peay, and he's still only 37. But Healy has no coordinator experience, so he may not be viable in that role right away in the FBS. He may next surface in the FCS.
Charlotte tabbed OL coach Pete Rossomando as interim HC for the remainder of the season. The 49ers are moving to the American Athletic Conference in 2023-24.
For handicapping purposes, our updated "dead-cat bounce" standings don't suggest fading Charlotte in the short-term. The five FBS schools that previously fired their HCs this season - Nebraska, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, and Colorado - rebounded at the window after dropping the ax:
•Before firing HC: 4-16 ATS
•Since firing HC: 10-6 ATS
•Week after firing HC: 3-2 ATS with two outright upsets (both as +14.5-or-more 'dogs)
And for whatever it's worth: The NFL's Carolina Panthers upset the Bucs 21-3 as 13-point underdogs on Sunday after firing Matt Rhule.
These results, in addition to my adjusted spread above showing a little value on the 49ers, suggest the Rice-Charlotte spread is a couple points too high.
Quarterback News
Clemson (bye)
In a postgame presser following Clemson’s 27-21 come-from-behind victory over Syracuse on Saturday, HC Dabo Swinney shot down any thoughts of a quarterback controversy: QB DJ Uiagalelei will remain the starter.
"DJ is our quarterback," Swinney said. "There ain't no question about that. That's our guy. That's our leader. You can write that right now."
Uiagalelei was benched with 4:35 left in the third quarter against Syraucse after going 13-of-21 for 138 yards with a 0/2 TD/INT ratio. At the time, Syracuse led 21-10. Clemson QB2 Cade Klubnik oversaw the Tigers scoring 17 consecutive points to steal the win.
Klubnik wasn't exactly lighting up Syracuse, however, finishing 2-of-4 for 19 yards with 13 rushing yards. RBs Phil Mafah and Will Shipley combined for 135 rushing yards on Klubnik’s first three drives to spur the comeback, along with Clemson's defense.
For Uiagalelei's part, the quarterback had no hard feelings about Swinney's decision, saying: "For me, if I was put in (Dabo Swinney’s) spot, I probably would have done the same thing.”
Uiagalelei's leash is very short, as Swinney showed on Saturday. But he'll remain Clemson's QB1 through the bye week.
Iowa (-10.5) vs. Northwestern
ATL: Iowa -15.0
After Saturday's 54-10 loss to Ohio State, Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz declined to name a starting quarterback for this Saturday's game against Northwestern.
In the first half against the Buckeyes, QB Spencer Petras went 6-of-14 for 49 yards and two interceptions with a fumble. The Hawkeyes inserted QB2 Alex Padilla for the second half. Padilla went 5-of-10 for 32 yards and two interceptions with a fumble.
"Let’s talk about that Tuesday," Ferentz said when asked about the quarterback situation. "We’ll watch the film like we always do and try and make a smart evaluation."
The total of Iowa-Northwestern opened at 31.5. If that number holds, this game will set a new record for the lowest point total ever for an FBS game. The current record holder is a 1995 game between Arizona-Oregon State that closed with a total of 33.
Injury News
Maryland (bye)
Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa didn't play Saturday against Northwestern due to the knee injury he aggravated the previous week in a loss to Michigan. Maryland QB2 Billy Edwards started in place of Tagovailoa. Maryland won 31-24 as 14-point favorites.
If there's good news for Tagovailoa and the Terps, it's that Maryland is on bye this week, giving Tua's little brother extra time to heal. Terps HC Mike Locksley previously told reporters that Tagovailoa re-aggravated a sprained MCL against Michigan and will return at some point this season.
Minnesota (-10) vs. Rutgers
ATL: Minny -13.8
Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan missed Saturday's game against Penn State with the concussion he suffered the previous week in a loss to Illinois. Those around the team had been anticipating the news since mid-week.
Gophers QB2 Athan Kaliakmanis, a freshman, went just 9-of-22 for 175 yards with a TD and an INT in relief of Morgan.
Morgan has a shot to return this weekend against Rutgers. Morgan traveled with the team to Happy Valley and went through light pregame warmups before ultimately being announced as out.
As Morgan is in concussion protocol, his status will be dependent on his progress this week and the prognosis he's given from doctors. Minnesota only opening -10 suggests the early-week market isn't super-optimistic about Morgan's status. Stay tuned.
Louisiana Tech (-10) at Florida International
ATL: LT -9.6
Louisiana Tech QB1 Parker McNeil exited Saturday's 42-41 OT loss to Rice with an undisclosed injury. McNeil was 5-for-7 for 32 yards and a TD at the time of the injury.
LTU QB2 Matthew Downing, the starter out of camp, came in off the bench and played well in relief. But Downing was knocked out of the game with his own undisclosed injury with 43 seconds remaining.
That left LTU QB3 Landry Lyddy, a freshman, to finish the game. Lyddy came off the bench to hit Cyrus Allen for a 19-yard TD and connect with Tre Harris for the 2-point conversion to send the game to OT. Lyddy led the team to a scoring drive in OT, but his 2-point attempt was overthrown, allowing Rice to escape.
The status of Tech's quarterbacks must be investigated before investing in this game on either side. If FIU were to pull the upset, they'd improbably improve to 4-4 on the season.
Ohio State (-14.5) at Penn State
ATL: OSU -12.9
Ohio State RB Miyan Williams and WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba both returned to the field in Saturday's 54-10 blowout win over Iowa. Smith-Njigba, who hadn’t played since Sept. 17 against Toledo, has been limited to parts of three games this season because of a hamstring injury.
Smith-Njigba was on a “pitch count” Saturday. He caught only one pass for seven yards against the Hawkeyes. For the year, Smith-Njigba has five receptions for 43 yards. This one season after he broke the Big Ten record for receiving yards in a season.
Williams returned after missing the Michigan State game due to a knee injury. Williams, who entered Saturday No. 1 in the nation with 7.8 YPC, gained only 19 yards on 10 carries against the Hawkeyes.
On the Penn State side, starting QB Sean Clifford was able to start Saturday's win over Minnesota after his availability had been in question for most of the week. Clifford's undisclosed injury had only been referred to as "soreness," though the team announced no structural damage was found and it would be a pain management thing on Clifford's end.
PSU starting LG Landon Tengwall missed his second-consecutive game with injury against Minnesota. Penn State was thin on interior depth for the Gophers game with C2 Nick Dawkins also out with a right arm injury.
Toledo (-11) at Eastern Michigan
ATL: Toledo -11.2
Toledo's fourth quarter against Buffalo was the stuff of nightmares. The Rockets, 5-2 and undefeated in the MAC, led Buffalo 27-10 heading into that final frame. The Rockets imploded, allowing 24 unanswered points amid a torrent of turnovers - six in total - to lose 34-27.
Toledo star QB Dequan Finn, who threw four interceptions against Buffalo, was injured on the final play of the game (which resulted in an INT near the goal-line). Finn took an enormous hit on the play and needed several moments to get up.
Toledo HC Jason Candle has not yet addressed the injury, outside of saying that Finn's status for this weekend has not yet been determined. Finn appeared to suffer a shoulder injury, but there's been online speculation that it was a head injury.
If Finn is unable to play against EMU, Toledo would turn to QB2 Tucker Gleason, a redshirt freshman. In five appearances this year, Gleason has attempted a mere 13 passes. My adjusted spread above for this game is with Finn under center.
SMU (-3) at Tulsa
ATL: SMU -4.3
SMU QB Tanner Mordecai exited Saturday’s 29-27 loss to Cincinnati with an undisclosed injury. SMU QB2 Preston Stone took over for Mordecai and went 6-for-15 for 74 yards and one TD. SMU has not yet updated Mordecai's status.
Boise State (-27.5) vs. Colorado State
ATL: BSU -24.7
Colorado State QB Clay Millen returned from a shoulder injury to start Saturday’s 17-13 win over Hawaii. Millen had been out for weeks rehabbing the injury. He went 17-of-24 for 177 yards with 53 rushing yards.
Millen has been by far-and-away CSU's best quarterback. His return is significant.
UAB (-6) at Florida Atlantic
ATL: UAB -10.1
UAB QB Dylan Hopkins was knocked out of last week's 20-17 loss to WKU in the first quarter with a head injury. UAB's radio broadcast reported Hopkins was ruled out for the game after he didn't pass concussion protocol.
UAB held WKU's high-flying passing attack to a mere 128 yards, and UAB RB DeWayne McBride ran for 197 yards, but the Blazers' inability to pass with QB2 Jacob Zeno - who finished 3-of-10 for 33 yards and a 1/1 TD/INT rate - eventually caused them to run out of gas.
UAB's run game and defense both terrify FAU, but if Hopkins doesn't play, the Owls become a live home 'dog against a team incapable of passing.
Michigan (-21.5) vs. Michigan State
ATL: Michigan -20.5
Michigan starting TE Erick All will miss the rest of the campaign after undergoing season-ending back surgery. All went under the knife last month. HC Jim Harbaugh updated his status on Monday. All posted 38 receptions for 437 yards last season.
Michigan's Luke Schoonmaker has emerged as the No. 1 tight end in his absence. Michigan still has a bit of depth at the position with Joel Honigford, Max Bredeson, Matthew Hibner and Colston Loveland working in behind him.
Miami (OH) (-9) at Akron
ATL: Miami -10.9
Miami (OH) QB Brett Gabbert returned from injury to go 21-for-38 for 222 yards with a rushing TD in Saturday's 16-10 loss to Western Michigan. The RedHawks had a shot to win it late but Gabbert’s 4th-and-10 pass intended for Jalen Walker was broken up.
Georgia State (-3) vs. Old Dominion
ATL: GSU -1.4
Old Dominion TE Zack Kuntz was out again on Saturday against Georgia Southern with the injury that's had him on the shelf since he suffered it Oct. 1 against Liberty. Outside of ODU disclosing that Kuntz is being monitored as he rehabs, status updates of any kind have been sparse (the team hasn't even confirmed the injury is to Kuntz's knee, what most suspect).
It's unclear if Kuntz is nearing a return, or if he's done for the season. HC Ricky Rahne isn't likely to clarify for us anytime soon. We'll be checking in frequently this week looking for clues.
Oregon (-14.5) at California
ATL: Oregon -16.6
Oregon RB Byron Cardwell missed Saturday’s win over UCLA with the lower-body injury that's had him on ice since he suffered it against Eastern Washington in early-Sept.
Cardwell is reportedly getting closer to a return. Ducks RBs Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington will continue to divvy carries as long as Cardwell is out.
Miami (-2.5) at Virginia
ATL: Miami -3.3
Miami QB Tyler Van Dyke exited Saturday's 45-21 loss to Duke with a right shoulder injury. Sacked in the second quarter, Van Dyke clutched his right shoulder as he left for the locker room.
Hurricanes QB2 Jake Garcia came on in relief and went 13-for-21 for 198 yards with two TD and three INT. Before his exit, Van Dyke went 11-for-16 for 81 yards and a TD. For the season, Van Dyke has thrown for 1,737 yards and a 10/4 TD/INT ratio.
In Saturday's game, Duke forced Miami into eight turnovers. Those eight turnovers, converted into 24 points, were the most any P5 team has forced against a P5 opponent since 2009. In addition to Garcia's three picks, the Hurricanes also lost five fumbles.
Miami, 3-4, cannot afford to lose this game. It must go 3-2 down the stretch to qualify for a bowl, and Florida State, Clemson, and Pitt still loom on the schedule (in addition to Georgia Tech).
Fresno State (-8) vs. San Diego St.
ATL: FSU -9.3
Fresno State QB Jake Haener remains week-to-week with the leg injury he suffered versus USC in September. Haener has missed four-consecutive games with the injury. HC Jeff Tedford offered no new information on Haener's prognosis outside of that.
The Bulldogs have been resolute, however, that Haener will return at some point this season. Fresno lost the first two games Haener missed. But QB2 Logan Fife has led the Bulldogs to consecutive victories since then.
Fife ran for two TD and threw for another in Saturday's 41-9 win over New Mexico. Fresno's mini-resurgence these past two weeks have come courtesy of the run game defense. The latter has allowed only 9.5 PPG the past two times out, while the former stampeded for 285 yards on 50 carries against the Lobos.
Ole Miss (-3) at Texas A&M
ATL: Mississippi -2.6
Texas A&M QB Haynes King was pulled from Saturday's loss to South Carolina late with an apparent shoulder injury. He was replaced by true freshman QB Conner Weigman. With A&M QB Max Johnson already done for the season with injury, A&M's only playable options at the position are King and Weigman.
Meanwhile, Mississippi appears to have dodged a bullet on a potential WR Malik Heath injury. Heath suffered a right shoulder injury after getting slung to the ground on a reception in the fourth quarter of Saturday's loss to LSU. He missed a series but then returned to the field to finish out the game.
Boston College (-10) at Connecticut
ATL: BC -11.1
Boston College found out prior to Saturday's loss at Wake Forest that starting LG Finn Dirstine must undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. In addition, starting C Drew Kendall missed the Wake Forest game with a broken wrist. Kendall's timetable remains unknown, but he's going to return this season according to reports.
Boston College’s snake-bitten, injury-riddled offensive line continues to haunt the team. Prior to Saturday, Kendall was the only starting offensive linemen for BC that had started every game this season. The issues started over the summer, when All-ACC OG Christian Mahogany tore his right ACL. Then, in September, starting RT Kevin Cline tore an ACL.
On Saturday, Boston College started two converted defensive linemen on the offensive interior, C Jackson Ness and RG Dwayne Allick. Jack Conley, a guard, has been starting at RT because of the injuries. A former preferred walk-on, Nick Thomas, started at LG on Saturday.
BC's only projected preseason OL starter that is healthy and in the spot he began is LT Ozzy Trapilo.
San Jose State (-26.5) vs. Nevada
ATL: SJSU -20.8
San Jose State's scheduled game Saturday night at New Mexico State was postponed due to the tragic death of Spartans RB Camdan McWright. McWright, 18, died in a traffic crash on Friday morning while riding an electric scooter.
San Jose State AD Jeff Konya said the game would be rescheduled for a date yet to be determined later this season. Complicating matters is the teams do not have a common bye week for the rest of the regular season - SJSU has none left, while NMSU is on bye the week after next.
But since San Jose State has a decent chance of playing in the MWC title game on Saturday, Dec. 3, you can also rule out that post-regular season week, too. Fortunately, SJSU-NMSU is a non-conference game, which means it could potentially be rescheduled for Saturday, Dec. 10, a day where the only other scheduled CFB game is Army-Navy.
The SJSU-NMSU game isn't likely to mean much for SJSU's bowl standing. But there's a possibility it could for NMSU. If the Aggies beat UMass and Lamar the next two times out - to improve to 4-5 - they would only need to upset either Missouri or Liberty to get within one win of bowl eligibility.
Baylor (+2.5) at Texas Tech
ATL: Baylor -0.8
Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough missed Saturday's 48-10 win over West Virginia as he continues to rehab the clavicle injury Shough suffered in early-September against FCS Murray State.
Behren Morton drew the start against WVU, with Donovan Smith listed as QB2. Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire said Saturday that Shough will return against Baylor this weekend. While you can expect Shough to be active, it's unclear at this time if he or Morton will start against the Bears.
Kansas State (pick 'em) vs. Oklahoma State
ATL: KSU -0.1
Kansas State blew a 28-10 lead to TCU on Saturday amid a rash of injuries. KSU QB1 Adrian Martinez was knocked out for the game on the very first drive with a lower-body injury. Not long after, top KSU LB Daniel Green joined him in the locker room after getting removed with his own injury.
As the game progressed, RB Deuce Vaughn, CB Julius Brents, S Josh Hayes, TE Ben Sinnott and QB2 Will Howard all suffered injuries in the eventual 38-28 loss. Howard was great in relief before going down, throwing for 225 yards and two TD with 31 yards and a TD on the ground.
We'll need to wait until later this week for status updates on KSU's wounded players. Not ideal with Okie State coming to town.
UCF (pick 'em) vs. Cincinnati
ATL: Cincy -1.3
Cincinnati QB Ben Bryant was in the starting lineup for Saturday's win over SMU after suffering a concussion on Oct. 8 against South Florida. Bryant benefited in having a bye week buffer to progress through the school’s concussion protocols.
Cincy also got back RB Corey Kiner and WR Will Pauling. Kiner, an LSU transfer, missed the USF game with a hand injury. Pauling caught six balls in the first two games but had been out since then with a knee injury.
But Cincy's leading WR Tyler Scott, who has 500 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns this year, was withheld from the SMU game with an ankle injury. It's unclear what his status for UCF is.
Thor's early-week bets:
ECU (+3.5) at BYU
Syracuse (-2) vs. Notre Dame
Kentucky (+13.5) at Tennessee
