Starting Pitchers: Trevor Rogers vs. Tarik Skubal
Wednesday could mark Tarik Skubal’s final start with Detroit as trade rumors continue to swirl. He’ll toe the rubber at Comerica Park opposite Baltimore’s Trevor Rogers (6-7, 4.17 ERA).
These squads have been frequent targets in the NRFI department. There have been zeroes on the scoreboard at the end of the first inning in 57 of the Orioles’ 108 games (53%) and in 56 of the Tigers’ 108 games (52%). Those are both top-10 NRFI cash rates.
Not even a midseason surgery could hinder Skubal. The reigning American League Cy Young winner has posted a stellar 2.70 ERA and 31.5% strikeout rate across 15 outings.
That is not good news for a Baltimore roster that averages the second-most strikeouts on the road (9.79 per game). Overall, the Orioles have failed to score in 27 of their 32 first innings versus a left-hander. Don’t expect that to change against a red-hot Skubal.
Skubal isn’t the only hurler in a groove. Rogers has not allowed a first-inning run in any of his previous 10 trips to the mound. The New Mexico native has surrendered just three extra-base hits and four walks in the opening frame all campaign (19 starts).
Detroit is not an easy first-inning matchup, but it does rank 25th in batting average with runners in scoring position (.239). Trust Rogers to escape any jams with no damage done.

Philadelphia Phillies (-157) at Miami Marlins (+130)
Starting Pitchers: Jesus Luzardo vs. Ryan Gusto
The Marlins will aim to complete a series sweep when they host the Phillies on Wednesday. Miami will hand the baseball to Ryan Gusto (0-2, 4.50 ERA), while Philadelphia counters with Jesus Luzardo (9-5, 3.31 ERA).
These hurlers have found success in this showdown before. Luzardo has tossed a scoreless first inning in each of his six career starts versus Miami. Gusto kept the Phillies from crossing home plate in the first inning during his June 15th start.
It’s worth pointing out that Kyle Schwarber is dealing with an illness. His absence would be a brutal blow for a Phillies offense that already sports the lowest on-base percentage in the Majors (.303).
Philadelphia has also registered the league’s lowest OPS on the road (.643) and produced one or fewer runs in six of their last 11 contests. Gusto features a seven-pitch mix and faces a lineup that could be without its star slugger. It’s his time to shine.
On the other side, Luzardo has been dominant outside of Philadelphia. The resourceful southpaw has recorded a 1.38 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 11 away starts. Take note that all 11 of those outings began with a clean opening frame.
Luzardo boasts a career 2.73 first-inning ERA and will battle a Marlins team that has logged the second-lowest OPS in the National League since the All-Star break (.652). Trust the arm over the bats in this spot.
