Friday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 101-73-7
The Tigers are tied for the 10th-most strikeouts in the league. However, that doesn't necessarily mean Mitch Spence is going to be able to take advantage of the matchup. He has struck out 105 batters in 126.0 innings. He has struck out more than five batters in just one of his last five starts.
This season, Spence has pitched in 30 games. He's struck out more than five batters just five times. In four of those five starts, he struck out six or seven batters. The problem with this line is that for Spence to hit the over, he essentially has to hit his ceiling. For a pitcher who has struggled to keep opponents off the scoreboard, there's no reason to back him on the more than tonight.
Zack Wheeler has only struck out nine Marlins in 45 attempts in his career. He's faced the team twice this season and struck out a total of seven batters. With that in mind, the less than seems like the obvious play here. But with the total set so high, we can’t help but feel like something fishy is going on.
Wheeler has struck out 183 batters in 167.2 innings this season. He has struck out at least six batters in each of his last 10 starts. In three of those starts, he struck out at least eight. While the Marlins have performed better than expected against Wheeler, we can't help but feel that averages are going to win out in this game. The Marlins have the 14th-most strikeouts in the league. With how Wheeler has pitched this season, there's no reason to think they can have three great performances against him.
Corbin Carroll is an abysmal 1-of-17 against the Astros' pitching staff. He's never faced Framber Valdez, though, the pitcher who will be on the mound to start tonight. Valdez has allowed only 120 hits in 150.1 innings this season. In his last start, he held the Kansas City Royals hitless over 7.0 innings.
Despite all of this, Carroll is hot right now. After failing to record a hit on Thursday, he saw his 14-game hitting streak come to an end. But that doesn't take away from the fact he's hit safely in 21 of his last 24 games. Valdez could give him some trouble, but Caroll hasn't gone hitless in back-to-back games since mid-July.
