It is so good to have America’s pastime back in our lives. We narrowly missed a 3-0 sweep, with Luis Severino spoiling the fun by striking out the last batter he faced. A 2-1 day isn’t too shabby, though. Let’s build on the positive Opening Day and start the week with a couple of more winners.

In his first full season on the big league club, Ben Brown earned his role as the fifth starter for the Cubs this season. He was never a highly lauded prospect, with a 45 prospect grade given via FanGraphs, and he only throws two pitches - a heater and a curveball.
Brown has hit the less than on this number in five of his eight career starts. With it being so early in the season, he likely won’t go past five innings in this one, especially with it being his first start of the season.
Making his first career start, there’s a strong likelihood Carmen Mlodzinski maxes out at around four innings. In his final spring training start, he went just three innings (64 pitches) while striking out three. He doesn’t possess the best strikeout stuff either, ranking in the 42nd percentile in strikeout rate among relievers last season.
This will be Kyle Hart’s first start in the Majors since 2020, but he has been stretched out to 70 pitches in spring training, which should put him in line for around 80 pitches today if all goes well. His final spring tune-up came against the team he draws today, the Cleveland Guardians. Their projected lineup has five bats with a 25% strikeout rate or worse against lefties dating back to last season.
