Monday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 20-16-1
Trevor Rogers has struck out four or more batters in four of his five starts this season. The only time he failed to strike out four, he still managed to ring up three batters. Yet, tonight, he will have his work cut out for him against the Nationals.
The Nationals have struck out the ninth-fewest times this season, They're barely averaging more than eight strikeouts per game. Rogers has only struck out seven Nationals in 27 at-bats in his career. Three of those strikeouts have been against Riley Adams. Rogers has pitched 5.0 innings in three of his five starts. He's yet to pitch 6.0 innings in a game. With his history against the Nationals and how good the Nationals are at making contact, he won't pitch long enough to hit this over.
In his last start, Bailey Falter struck out eight Milwaukee Brewers for his best pitching performance of the season. After such a performance, the over may seem like the right move tonight, especially against the team with the third-most strikeouts in baseball.
However, Falter's start against the Brewers feels like an outlier. Before that game, he struck out 10 total batters in four games. Against the Baltimore Orioles, he pitched 6.0 innings and struck out just one batter. He's faced some very good contact lineups, but this line feels like an overreaction to one game. If Falter proves he can strike out five or more again, then it's best to evaluate him on a game-by-game basis. But right now, we'd take less than 4.5 against anyone.
Griffin Canning has allowed 30 hits and 20 earned runs in 24.1 innings. Five of the hits he's allowed are home runs. Harper has two home runs in his last four games. However, he has been in a slump for most of April - 0-for-7 in his last two games, for instance. Yet, Canning could be the matchup Harper needs to break out of his slump. There is a chance Harper could go deep against the pitcher prone to giving up home runs. Or he could hit his fifth double of the season. Either way, there will be plenty of opportunities for Harper in this game.
