Starting the slate off, Carlos Rodon and the Yankees try to tame the Tigers in Detroit at 3:10 p.m. ET. With the wind blowing out, it might be hard to contain the bats in this one, but Rodon should be able to find the punchouts.
The Tigers’ lineup projects to have five batters with a 26% strikeout rate or greater against left-handed pitching dating back to last season. Detroit’s roster has a 30.9% strikeout rate and .298 xwOBA across 55 plate appearances against the Yankees’ hard-throwing lefty. Rodon’s gaudy strikeout numbers from a couple of years ago have dropped off, but he is still capable of finding at least six strikeouts in the right matchup.
Richard Fitts struck out four batters in his first start of the year, but doesn’t profile as a strikeout guy going forward. FanGraphs’ projection has him pegged for a K/9 from 6.77-7.15. That is as poor as it gets for a starter. Fitts had four starts last season and failed to eclipse this mark in each one. He faces the Blue Jays on Monday, who don’t profile to be strikeout-prone whatsoever.
The Dodgers’ red-headed right-hander looked good in his return to the mound after nearly two years. Dustin May’s movement still had his pitches looking like whiffle balls, as he punched out six batters across five innings against Atlanta. They only mustered one hit and an unearned run against him.
May faces the Nationals, who have the fifth-highest strikeout rate (27.6%) against righties in the early going.
