The Rangers aren’t known for having the highest strikeout rate, but they swing and miss a ton against Kevin Gausman. Their roster owns a collective 31.8% strikeout rate and a .271 xwOBA across 107 plate appearances against him. He can be a bit inconsistent from time to time, but has cleared this number in six of his last eight starts.
Gausman is coming off a stellar seven-inning performance against the Padres. San Diego has the third-lowest strikeout rate against righties, and he struck out nine, allowing just four baserunners in a shutout outing. We recently saw Will Warren find double-digit strikeouts against Texas. Hopefully, Gausman can do more of the same.
After a stellar start to the season, it appears Andrew Heaney has reverted to the mean. He is back to walking plenty of batters, and not going deep into games. Over his last five starts, Heaney has failed to pitch into the sixth on four occasions. He sports a 4.44 ERA (6.28 FIP) and averages three walks allowed per game.
Heaney hit the less than on this number in 21 of his 31 starts last year, 18 out of 28 starts in 2023 and 11 out of 14 starts in 20222. I think you get the picture, right? Including his results this season, that adds up to a 66% hit rate over the past four seasons. Today, he takes on the Diamondbacks, who rank fourth in wRC+ (115).
A tale as old as time, fade the Rockies when they are on the road, especially when they are coming off a stint at home. The Coors Field impact is legit, and this offense is not. They are last in wRC+ (71) and second in strikeout rate (26.3%) when facing right-handed pitching. Additionally, they see the fifth-fewest pitches per plate appearance and have the second-highest swing rate.
Jameson Taillon isn’t a world-beater by any means, but he can eat some outs in the right matchup, like this one. The weather is suited for pitchers today, too, with wind blowing in at 10 miles per hour (MPH) at Wrigley Field, making temperatures feel closer to the low 50s.
