Monday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
PrizePicks Record: 15-18
This is not the 2022 National League Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara that we used to know. He is struggling in his return to the mound, ranking in the bottom 16th percentile in xERA, 30th in xFIP, 20th in strikeout rate and 11th in walk rate among starters this season.
Alcantara has allowed three or more earned runs in four consecutive starts and was just rocked by the team he faces today (Los Angeles Dodgers). Los Angeles tagged him for seven hits and seven earned runs across 2.2 innings of work.
The Braves have been cautious with AJ Smith-Shawver going deep into games. He is averaging just 77 pitches per start, so we shouldn’t expect him to work much more than five frames or so.
Because of this limited usage, Smith-Shawver has hit the less than on this mark in three of his four starts. Plus, the matchup is pretty good here. He squares off with Cincinnati, who rank 16th in wRC+ (101) against right-handed pitching this year.
Griffin Canning has increased his strikeout rate this year, but let’s see if he can keep it up against the Diamondbacks. Arizona is fourth in wRC+ (120) and 17th in strikeout rate (21.7%) against righties this season.
Since last season, Canning has hit the less than on this player prediction in 23 out of 38 starts.
