Saturday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Predictions
The 37-year-old Paul Goldschmidt will face the Pittsburgh Pirates and left-handed pitcher Bailey Falter on Saturday. The veteran first baseman has faced Falter seven times from his time in the National League, going 3-for-7 with a double and a walk with a .500 on-base percentage (OBP) and a .571 slugging percentage. It’s a small sample size, but it’s certainly worth noting.
Goldschmidt got off to a quick start against the Milwaukee Brewers last weekend, collecting five hits, a double, a home run and five runs scored. He was blanked in the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, his former team, but he should get on track against Falter.
Jacob deGrom was solid in his first outing of the season last Sunday, allowing just two hits and two walks across five scoreless innings while striking six strikeouts in a no-decision. The right-handed veteran will be facing the Tampa Bay Rays. They’re middle of the road during the early going with 24 walks across seven games so far.
Traditionally, deGrom hasn’t been a pitcher to issue a lot of walks, but he has just four starts since April 28th, 2023. There is a lot of rust, as he returns from a stress reaction in his right shoulder and a torn UCL. Look for deGrom to issue at least two free passes on Saturday.
Nick Pivetta opened the season with seven scoreless innings with one hit allowed, zero walks and four strikeouts in a victory over the Atlanta Braves last Sunday. He’ll get a crack at the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Cubs have struck out more than any other team in the Majors during the early going, whiffing 84 times in 10 games. To be fair, they did play two early games in the Tokyo Dome against the Los Angeles Dodgers, so they have a few more games than some of the other teams. Even so, that’s 8.4 strikeouts per game.
Veteran outfielder Randy Arozarena faces lefty Robbie Ray, the former Seattle Mariner, although the two were never teammates. That’s bad news for Arozarena, who would probably prefer not to have to face the southpaw.
Arozarena is just 3-for-23 (.130) in his career against the veteran lefty, with zero RBI, one walk and nine strikeouts. He has a .261 slugging rate and .461 OPS in his career against Ray. Look for Arozarena to underproduce in his Saturday contest.
Brady Singer opened the season with a dominant performance, allowing just a single hit with two walks and eight strikeouts across seven scoreless innings in his season debut Monday against the Texas Rangers.
Singer faces a Milwaukee Brewers offense that has had Swiss cheese bats during the early going. The Brew Crew has 77 strikeouts through eight games - 9.6 per game. That’s music to the ears of Singer, who should be able to notch at least a half-dozen punchouts.
The 25-year-old right fielder for the Blue Jays has reached base in the past three games, collecting three singles and a double with a hit by pitch (HBP). The HBP doesn’t count toward total bases.
Alan Roden is averaging 1.33 total bases per game across the previous three outings. All it takes is a knock to get us home on this play.
