Thursday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This season: 85-67-9
The Rangers will likely be going with a piggy-back pitching approach today, with Andrew Heaney starting before Dane Dunning takes over. That was the strategy they deployed in Game 1 of the ALDS against Baltimore, the last time Heaney pitched. He was cruising along before getting pulled at 56 pitches with 3 2/3 innings under his belt.

Considering this is his first outing in 12 days, a shorter leash looks likely once again, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him pulled after one turn through the order. Houston has also fared well against him in the past and owns a .356 woBA (.336 xwOBA) in 195 combined plate appearances. In his last start facing the ‘Stros, he went just 4 2/3 innings while allowing five hits, four walks and three earned runs.
NL Rookie of the Year, Corbin Carroll, is always a threat to steal and get into scoring position when he gets on base. Leading off atop the Arizona lineup could give him up to five plate appearances today. He has gone over this mark in four of seven playoff games and 14 of his last 25 games overall. The Phillies have done a good job at keeping him off the basepaths so far, but with Ranger Suarez on the mound, it could be a different story today. Suarez is solid, but he is nowhere near the caliber of starter that Zack Wheeler or Aaron Nola is.
Jose Abreu hasn’t been at his best this season but has finally started to heat up at the right time. He posted a 123 wRC+ in the month of September and went off in the ALDS against the Twins. He has exceeded this mark in four of his seven games this postseason and 11 of his last 16 dating back to the end of the regular season. Abreu is 5-19 with four homers against Heaney and has mashed left-handed pitching throughout his career. Surrounded by the lefty-hitting Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker and Michael Brantley, Abreu will probably see plenty of left-handed pitching even once Heaney leaves the game.
