Jordan Hicks is coming off a rough outing in the Bronx with some tough conditions, but I like his chance to rebound here, even in a tough matchup. Similar to Dustin May, Hicks possesses elite ride on his sinker and sweeper combo.
Through three starts, he ranks in the top 89th percentile in CSW%, primarily leaning on those pitches (83% of the time). The Phillies aren’t the easiest matchup for strikeouts, but their roster does have a combined 26.1% strikeout rate across 46 plate appearances against him.
There is nothing special about Eduardo Rodriguez at this stage in his career, but in the right matchup, he can fire six solid frames. The Marlins have been decent at the dish to start the year off, but there is no question this is one of the worst lineups in the game right now.
It won’t take much for the Diamondbacks veteran left-hander to get through this lineup. Miami has seen the fourth-fewest pitches per plate appearance this year.
Similar to Eduardo Rodriguez, there isn’t anything popping off the page for Michael Lorenzen, but he eats outs and should find his way to six innings with the matchup on hand. He faces the Tigers, who have been ice-cold to start the year. They have the second-worst wRC+ (62) facing righties so far.
Seven of the last 10 right-handed starters to face them have exceeded this number, with six going over 16.5. He also gets the benefit of some good pitching weather, with winds blowing in at 10 miles per hour (MPH). Pitching in the spacious Comerica Park doesn’t hurt either.
