Tuesday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 5-0-1
Yu Darvish struck out seven in a 5.0-inning start against the San Francisco Giants last Thursday. Dating back to last season, it was his third consecutive start of 5.0 or fewer innings. Despite pitching so few innings, he still has managed to strike out seven in two of those three starts.
Darvish hasn't faced the Cardinals since 2022, but he does have decent numbers against the lineup. He's struck out 33 batters in 99 at-bats. The biggest issue will be staying in the game long enough to hit this over, as he has also given up six home runs and 30 hits to this lineup. The good news is the Cardinals have struck out 56 times in five games, so 5.0 innings should be enough tonight.
Andrew Heaney starts for the Texas Rangers tonight after finishing the 2023 season as a reliever. Therefore, looking at his numbers near the end of last year doesn't give much of an advantage when trying to predict what he will do this season. However, he struck out at least four in nearly every single game he started in 2023.
Heaney has little experience against the Rays. He enters the game with just 10 strikeouts in 38 at-bats. But this total is so low Heaney can have a below-average start and still hit the over in this game. As oddsmakers get used to Heaney in a starting role again, bettors can take advantage.
Ketel Marte got off to a great start, going 6-of-9 at the plate in his first two games of the year. However, in his last three games, he's just 1-for-10 and has yet to record an extra-base hit this season.
Last season, Marte finished the year batting .276 with 157 hits, 60 of which were for extra bases. It's just a matter of time before he starts hitting doubles and home runs. Yankees' starter Nestor Cortes struggled early in his first start of the year, then he settled in and got control of the game. Expect him to be sharp today, as Marte once again fails to record an extra-base hit.
