Tuesday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
This Season: 17-13-1
This line is one strikeout too high. Pablo Lopez has struck out seven batters in three of his four starts, but he has yet to go over that number this season. He faces a White Sox lineup that he has struck out 10 times in 45 at-bats. So what suggests that he will set a season-high in strikeouts? Nothing.
The White Sox rank 15th in the league in total strikeouts. They average fewer than 10 per game. Lopez could ring up a lot of batters if he pitches deep into the game. However, even when he went 7.0 innings against the Kansas City Royals earlier this season, he only struck out seven.
In his last start, Tanner Houck struck out nine in a complete game against the same Guardians team he faces tonight. With that in mind, it might be shocking to see this number so low. While we ultimately think he will go over, he could come closer to missing this than many might think.
Houck has struck out at least seven in three of his four starts. However, he did not fare well when he pitched against the Los Angeles Angels for the second time this season. After striking out seven in 6.0 innings, he gave up 12 hits and seven runs while striking out just two in 5.2 innings the next time he faced them. Will the Guardians have similar success against Houck in their second meeting with him? Maybe, but even if their bats wake up, we still like Houck to strike out at least five.
Trea Turner only has two at-bats against Reds starter Andrew Abbott. He has not recorded a hit in either. But Turner is off to a red-hot start and has hit safely in 11 consecutive games. He already has nine multi-hit games and 10 of his 32 hits are for extra-bases.
Abbott has been pretty solid this season, giving up 18 hits in 23.1 innings. He faced the Phillies on April 1st, giving up only three hits. With the type of hitter Turner is, expect him to learn from that matchup and get two total bases tonight.
