Yesterday, Joey Gallo crushed his total bases over, while Bryson Stott singled in the top of the 9th to get us two wins. Cincinnati Reds' pitcher Connor Overton did almost everything wrong in his first start of the season, but he did strike out five, giving us our only loss of the day. This Season: 3-3
Early in the season, it looks like a good idea to take the strikeouts over for the starting pitcher facing the Miami Marlins. The Marlins have 52 strikeouts this season, the second-most in the MLB. That's over 10 per game.
Kenta Maeda had Tommy John surgery and missed all of 2022, so this will be his first start since August 21, 2021. There is concern that he won't be back to his usual self yet, but he is facing the exact lineup someone coming off a major surgery would want their first time on the mound. Back in 2021, he had 113 strikeouts in 106.1 innings pitched. If he goes at least 5.0 tonight, he should hit this without issue.
We're only five games into the season, but Machado has not delivered much for the Padres thus far. He is 5-19 on the season, with three RBIs, but he is yet to have an extra-base hit this season. Remember that this is a hitter that had at least 28 home runs and 31 doubles in each of his last two seasons.
While his numbers against the Diamondbacks aren't great, going 3-13, he does have one home run and two RBIs. Additionally, Gallen was shelled in his first appearance of the season, giving up six hits, five earned runs, and walking three in 4.2 innings. This could be the exact matchup that Machado needs to get going.
New York Yankees fans are very excited about the 21-year-old Volpe. Yet thus far, he is just 2-11 for a batting average of .182. He has walked four times, which has brought his on-base percentage up to .400 and allowed him to steal three bases.
Tonight, the Philadelphia Phillies are starting Matt Strahm, a pitcher who has only started 25 games in his entire eight-year career. He will likely only go through the lineup once, then Volpe will start to see other pitchers, perhaps even one of the relievers he saw last night. It's going to be a little before Volpe is completely adjusted to the MLB, but we like him to at least single on Tuesday.
