This Season: 100-96
Bryce Elder's strikeout totals have been wildly inconsistent of late. In his last start, he struck out zero batters in 3.2 innings. This performance came after a six-strikeout performance, which was preceded by a nine-strikeout start. But when you look at his starts before his last three, some consistency shines through.
For nine consecutive games, he tossed between two and five strikeouts. In five of those starts, he struck out three or fewer. Earlier this season, he struck out just three Cubs in 4.1 innings. Elder isn't a strikeout pitcher, and the Cubs are 17th in the league in total strikeouts. This is a low number, but we recommend the under.
George Kirby has had some really good performances this season, but tonight likely won't be one of them. The Astros have the third-best strikeout ratio in the MLB. Kirby is striking out less than one batter per inning, and in his career, he has only struck out this Astros lineup 14 times in 54 at-bats.
Earlier this season, Kirby faced the Astros and struck out just three despite pitching 6.2 innings. He has struck out six or more batters in seven of his last 11. But with his previous struggles against this lineup, we expect him to strike out just three or four tonight.
Ryan O‘Hearn has only faced Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray once in his career. While he didn't hit safely, that is way too small of a sample size to give us any real information.
We do know that Gray has allowed 147 hits in 153.0 innings this season. O'Hearn is one of the few batters in baseball batting .300 or better this year. Though hitless in consecutive games, he had a seven-game hitting streak before his mini drought. Also important to note is that O'Hearn has not gone hitless in three consecutive games since Aug. 6-9.
