Wednesday’s Best MLB PrizePicks Player Predictions
PrizePicks Record This Season: 6-12
The Tigers’ offense is a joke once again. It doesn’t matter who goes up against them, they will typically find success. Detroit is 27th in wRC+ (81) against right-handed pitching. Seven of the last 10 righties to face them have recorded 18 outs. Dane Dunning isn’t a world-beater but he can be against the Tigers. He is very efficient with his pitches, averaging just 3.60 per plate appearance, good for the 16th-lowest mark among 137 qualified pitchers. Dunning has pitched into the seventh inning in two of his three starts this season.
Brandon Pfaadt does not deserve this sort of line. The Diamondbacks’ sophomore right-hander has stayed under this line in 16 of his career 21 starts, averaging 5.3 punchouts per start. The Cubs aren’t known to strike out at an alarming rate this year either. Twelve of the 15 right-handed starters they have faced have stayed under this number.
The A’s “ace” has been excellent to start the season and has yet to allow a single earned run. He has faced a trio of relatively weak offenses in the Nationals, Tigers and Guardians, and has gone over this mark in each start, hence his performance. Tonight he takes on the Cardinals who haven’t been particularly great at the plate to start the year either. They are 20th in wRC+ (87) when facing right-handed pitching and have ceded pretty quick at-bats. Ten of the 15 right-handed starters to face them have gone at least six innings.
St. Louis has also averaged just 3.85 pitches per plate appearance, the eighth-lowest among all teams. Blackburn has been pretty efficient with his pitch count, tied for throwing the 25th-fewest pitches per plate appearance out of 133 pitchers. Ride the wave with Blackburn, especially with him pitching in the spacious Oakland Coliseum.
