Thursday’s Best MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 41-21
The Phillies ace has uncharacteristically issued two and three free passes in his last two starts, respectively, but if history tells us anything, he’s bound to stay under this line. Last season he ranked in the top 93rd percentile in BB%. Including his playoffs starts, Zach Wheeler stayed under this line in 28/37 games in 2023 and 23/32 games in 2022. With his 3/5 hit rate this season, add that all up and we’re looking at a 73% hit rate. The Reds aren’t exactly known to walk very frequently either and are 19th in BB% vs righties this season.
This line is for the Justin Verlander of old, not the current iteration. He’s making his second start of the season and hurled just 78 pitches against the Nationals in his first one, racking up four strikeouts across six innings of work. We could see a pitch count closer to 90 in this one, but even if it does go that high, this line is far too inflated. Verlander failed to eclipse this line in 19/27 starts last season while ranking in the bottom 36% in K% and 25% in whiff%.
Yes, the A’s strike out a ton, but Nestor Cortes isn’t necessarily the one to deliver on that. Since joining the Yankees’ starting rotation he has been held under this line in 41/49 starts. There’s not much more to be said here other than the fact five of the seven lefties to face Oakland this season have been held under this mark. It’s a big line, reserved for elite strikeout pitchers, even in good matchups.
