Wednesday’s Best MLB Underdog Fantasy Player Predictions
Bryan Reynolds HIGHER 0.5 Runs
Bryan Reynolds and the Pirates have a Charmin-soft pitching matchup tonight. According to FanGraphs, Trevor Williams had a 5.55 ERA, 5.66 xERA, 5.21 xFIP and 5.09 SIERA in 30 starts last season. He was destroyed by lefties and righties, yielding a .371 wOBA to the former and a .385 wOBA to the latter.
The Pirates can hang runs on the scoreboard tonight, and Reynolds is positioned to cross home plate as Pittsburgh’s likely No. 2 hitter. He’s slotted in the two-hole every game this season, but tonight is the first time the Pirates will face a right-handed starting pitcher this season. Since 2021, the switch-hitting outfielder has had a .356 OBP, .225 ISO and 128 wRC+ against righties. So, Reynolds should put himself on base for the hitters behind him. The Underdog Cheat Sheet projects Reynolds to have 0.9 runs tonight.
Yordan Alvarez HIGHER 1.5 Total Bases
Yordan Alvarez has feasted on right-handed pitching. In 1,077 plate appearances against righties since 2021, Alvarez has hit 72 homers, 52 doubles and three triples with a .285 batting average, .298 ISO and .583 slugging. Conversely, Chris Bassitt has coughed up a .268 batting average, .512 slugging and 43 extra-base hits to 411 left-handed batters faced since last season.
In addition, while batter-versus-pitcher data should be taken with a grain of salt, Alvarez has teed off on Bassitt. According to Baseball Savant, Alvarez has had a .333 batting average, .375 xBA, 1.133 slugging, 1.001 xSLG and four homers in 17 plate appearances against Bassitt, and the Underdog Cheat Sheet projects Alvarez to tally 3.2 total bases tonight.
Freddie Freeman HIGHER 1.5 Total Bases
Freddie Freeman shouldn’t be dismissed as a threat at the dish tonight because he’s facing a fellow lefty. In 626 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers since 2021, Freeman has hit 37 doubles, two triples and 24 homers with a .298 batting average, .202 ISO and .500 slugging.
Additionally, Kyle Harrison has struggled in same-handed matchups. The young lefty has coughed up three doubles, three homers, a .333 batting average and .641 slugging to 45 lefties. As a result, the Underdog Cheat Sheet projects Freeman to have 2.2 total bases tonight.
Chris Taylor HIGHER 0.5 Total Bases
Chris Taylor is a platoon utility player with a track record of success against southpaws. In 471 plate appearances against lefties since 2021, he’s hit 27 doubles, three triples and 18 homers with a .237 batting average, .211 ISO and .448 slugging.
Thankfully, Taylor isn’t inept against righties and can play multiple positions. Therefore, he’s not a lock to be lifted for a pinch-hitter if the Giants bring in a right-handed reliever. So, he’s had three, four and four plate appearances in his three starts this season. Taylor can clear the low bar of recording a hit and is projected to have 1.6 total bases tonight.
