Saturday’s NBA Best Bets & Picks
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Sacremento Kings at San Antonio Spurs (-18.5) | O/U 230.5 (-108/-112)
The Spurs were one of the best stories of the first half. They went from not even having a shot at the playoffs last season to being a legitimate contender in the Western Conference. San Antonio is only three games back of the top seed. A large part of that progression comes from Victor Wembanyama, who is establishing himself as one of the top big men and is fifth in rebounds (11.1). The Spurs have an excellent backcourt, with the De'Aaron Fox trade from last season paying off and last year’s Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle continuing to flourish. They rank 11th in assists (6.9).
The Kings are heading in the opposite direction. This was a playoff team two years ago, but they have since fired the head coach who got them there and traded their top guard, De'Aaron Fox. Now they have the worst record in the NBA, are on a 15-game losing streak and their two star players, Domantas Sabonis and Zach LaVine, are done for the year.
It’s a big spread, but the Kings are that bad at the moment. The Spurs should be able to control this game and grab an easy win.
Pick: Spurs -18.5 (-108)
Detroit Pistons (-10.5) at Chicago Bulls | O/U 232.5 (-105/-115)
The Pistons made a strong statement to start the second half of the season by defeating the Knicks in a decisive victory and sweeping the season series, winning all three games by at least 15 points. Even with the Eastern Conference standings very close, the top-seeded Pistons are setting themselves apart, especially defensively, ranking second with a 109.2 adjusted defensive rating. Cade Cunningham is a star, coming off a stellar 42-point performance against New York. He’s also established himself as a great facilitator, as his 9.7 assists per game rank second in the league.
The Bulls decided at the trade deadline that it was time to rebuild, and they traded away multiple starters, including Nikola Vucevic and Coby White. As a result, the team is plummeting, dropping 10 of their last 11 games. During that span, they rank 23rd in points per game (110.9).
Detroit should continue its momentum against a team playing its worst basketball of the year.
Pick: Pistons -10.5 (-115)
