I'm looking at two three-pointer player predictions on PrizePicks tonight that don't make much sense. Terry Rozier will look to break out of his funk when his Miami Heat take on the Denver Nuggets and Julius Randle will attempt to do the same against the New York Knicks. Will either player shoot well tonight? What should we expect from Daniel Gafford in increased minutes against the Oklahoma City Thunder?
Here are the three best NBA PrizePicks player predictions for Friday, January 17th.
Terry Rozier is averaging 1.5 three-pointers per game, but he can thank the beginning of the year for that current average. He's made one or fewer three-pointers in 13 of his last 15 games, and he hasn't made more than two threes since December 1st.
The Nuggets are tied for 20th in the league, allowing 13.8 threes per game. This means Heat shooters are likely to have opportunities tonight. While Rozier went 2-of-3 against the Nuggets earlier this season, he also put up that performance in November, a month where he averaged 1.6 makes per game. In January, he's averaging just 0.8. Until Rozier can knock down multiple threes in back-to-back games, his less than should be taken every game.
Much like Rozier, Julius Randle has been ice-cold from beyond the arc, so there is no reason to trust him tonight against the Knicks. Though Randle is averaging 1.6 made threes per game, he's made one or fewer in seven consecutive games. He's averaging 1.1 made threes per contest in January, but that is only because of a 5-for-7 performance against the Boston Celtics on January 2nd.
The Knicks rank 16th in the league in three-pointers allowed, giving up 13.6 per game this season. But because of the way Randle has been shooting lately, there's no reason to back him in this contest. Plus, Randle ranks fifth on the team in three-pointers made per game. This means four players are more likely to take advantage of this matchup than him, and every single one of them is shooting better than he is right now.
Daniel Gafford is only averaging six rebounds per game, but he's going to see increased playing time tonight with Dereck Lively out. Lively is averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. When he missed Wednesday's game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Gaffored played 30 minutes and pulled down 12 rebounds.
This season, Gafford has had one very good game and one very bad game against the Thunder. In the first meeting, he pulled down 12 rebounds, but he only pulled down two in their most recent meeting. I expect Gafford to perform more similarly to the first matchup, as the Thunder are allowing the second-most rebounds per game this season. With elevated minutes, Gafford has already proven he's talented enough to hit this number against multiple teams.
