Los Angeles Lakers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

Even though these are the top two teams in the Western Conference, the Thunder are highly favored in this matchup. That is because Oklahoma City appears to be the best team early in the season with a league-best 11-1 record. They are coming into this matchup leading the league with a +8.6 adjusted net rating, which is anchored by their top adjusted defense rating (108.7). Their half-court defense is all about applying pressure and forcing mistakes, and they are fourth in opponents' turnovers per game (16.5).

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the reigning MVP, and with how he’s starting the season, he looks to capture the award again. He comes in with over 30 points in 10 out of 11 games, including seven straight.

On the other side, the Lakers have someone who could also be in the MVP conversation. Luka Doncic's first full season with the Lakers could not be going any better. He's already put himself among legends. He's the first player since Wilt Chamberlain in 1962 to begin a season with three straight games scoring over 40 points, and he is the first Laker since Kobe Bryant in 2007 to average 45 points across three games.

You expected Doncic to step up in LeBron James' absence, but Austin Reaves has also been playing well, with his 30.3 points and nine assists per game ranking fifth.

With the Lakers, Doncic had 23 and 30 points last year versus the Thunder. Oklahoma City will allow Doncic to get his points, but they will minimize the options outside of him.

Denver Nuggets vs. Los Angeles Clippers

Looking at the start of the season for the Nuggets, they are certainly a title contender. They have been crushing teams, and their two losses are to the Warriors in overtime and a two-point loss to the Trail Blazers. Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon are each major contributors to an offense ranked second in points per game. (124.2).

Over the previous five seasons, Joker has won three MVP awards and came in second twice. It looks like he will be in the running once again, as he's averaging a triple-double this season - 25.2 points, 13 rebounds and 11.9 assists.

The Clippers are in shambles, as evidenced by their vulnerability when key players are missing. The usual suspects are out with injuries, as injury-prone Kawhi Leonard is dealing with a sprained ankle and Bradley Beal has a hip issue. This has forced James Harden to be the primary scoring option, and during their four-game losing streak, he has scored at least 25 points in three games. Unfortunately, they lack the depth to support Harden.

Defensively, this squad has struggled over its last three games, allowing 111.3 points per game. The injuries to their offensive stars have hurt them, as they are scoring 102.3 points per game,  second-fewest in the league.

The Nuggets have covered their lone game with a rest disadvantage, and the Clippers are 0-3 with the rest advantage. The shorthanded Clippers should struggle against one of the top offenses.
