In the Eagles' Divisional Round win, Jalen Hurts injured his knee and his dual-threat upside was seemingly up in the air. Well, it seems he's just fine after rushing for three touchdowns in the NFC Championship game. Hurts' running skills, especially in goal-to-go situations, should play a big part in this matchup vs. Kansas City.
We all know Philadelphia loves using the "Tush Push" when it gets down near the goal line. He scored on two of those against Washington last game and nearly had another vs. the Rams. That play alone gives Hurts a great chance at finding the end zone on the ground.
Hurts also has the elite ability to keep the ball in read-option plays or on designed runs. The Eagles may need that more often if the Chiefs focus on stopping Saquon Barkley in the red zone. Hurts' rushing is a real threat within the 10-yard line and we saw him score on a called quarterback draw against the Commanders. Considering Kansas City's blitz tendencies, Hurts can also easily scramble for a touchdown.
We saw all of this come true when the Eagles and Chiefs faced off in the Super Bowl two years ago. Hurts ran for three scores - two on the Tush Push and one on a designed run. He's now scored a rushing touchdown in 12 out of 18 games in the regular season and playoffs so far this year. He also scored 15 rush touchdowns in 17 games last season.
A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are the big headliners in the Eagles' receiving corps. Yet, Dallas Goedert has been the most consistent and productive pass-catcher during the playoffs. The Philly tight end had seven catches for 85 yards in the NFC Conference Championship game after posting 56 and 47 yards in the previous two games.
Goedert has a great opportunity to keep this production going in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs allowed the most receiving yards to tight ends this season, giving up 67.2 per contest on average. The defense held Buffalo's tight ends in check last game but allowed 63 yards to Texans tight end Dalton Schultz in the Divisional Round.
During the regular season, the Chiefs allowed at least 45 receiving yards to a tight end in 11 out of 16 games (outside of a meaningless Week 18 where Kansas City rested starters). They also allowed six receptions per game to opposing tight ends this season (fourth-most in the NFL). Goedert had 60 yards on six catches versus the Chiefs in the Super Bowl two years ago.
Since the middle of November, Xavier Worthy has been the Chiefs' most explosive offensive playmaker. The attack still leans on the run heavily and features Travis Kelce in a big role. When Kansas City wants a big play, though, Worthy is usually the guy.
The rookie just went for 85 receiving yards and 16 rushing yards in the AFC Conference Championship game. He's now averaging 66.3 total yards per game over the past nine contests with at least 75 combined yards in four of the past five. Worthy also has five or more catches in seven straight games and at least two rush attempts in four of the last five games.
The Chiefs are looking to get the ball in Worthy's hands as much as possible. Andy Reid loves getting his speedy, shiftier receivers in space and Worthy has fully taken over that role. Philadelphia has excellent outside corners but can get beat by slot guys. The Eagles’ defense will also likely key in on Kelce and focus on stopping the run. Look for a big game from Worthy yet again.
