We have a solid four-game slate tonight and some prop bet trends to consider. Let’s take a look.
Tuesday’s NHL Best Bets & Picks
Year to date: +23.74 units
New York Islanders (+135) at New Jersey Devils (-135)
The Islanders and Devils are both high-scoring squads, averaging 3.31 and 3.57 goals per game. They also each allow over three goals per game, though New Jersey’s home/away splits are impressive. In seven home games, the Devils have allowed only 13 goals, but in eight away games, they have allowed a whopping 31. In fact, every critical metric favors them significantly at home and suggests betting against them when they leave Jersey. Tonight, they’re home against an Islanders team that has shown flashes of promise, particularly rookie Matthew Schaefer, but struggles on the road against good teams.
Ilya Sorokin began the season terribly, but he has been better in his last three starts. Statistically, he is better on the road, holding a .902 save percentage and 2.65 GAA versus .880/3.51 at home. Jacob Markstrom missed some time with a lower-body injury but has won both starts since returning. I feel like this game stays under the 6.5 total and that the Devils dominate on the defensive end. Give me the puck line and a 3-1 or 4-1 game.
New Jersey is dominant in stopping power plays, boasting a 95% penalty kill rate at home. The Islanders on the road are terrible when an extra man is on either side, scoring on 8.3% of their own chances while holding only a 71.4% penalty kill. Jack Hughes continues to lead the Devils, scoring 18 points in 15 games, including five on the power play. Let’s grab him to get 2+ points tonight. Timo Meier and Bo Horvat have been shot machines of late, so a small SOG parlay could pay great dividends tonight.
Pick: Devils -1.5 (+158)
Pick: Jack Hughes over 1.5 points (+153)
Pick: Timo Meier + Bo Horvat over 2.5 SOG Each (+141)
Columbus Blue Jackets (+154) at Edmonton Oilers (-156)
(Quick reminder/disclosure/confession that I am an Oilers fan.) Some fans on Twitter were calling for the Oilers to “get embarrassed” instead of doing their regular “make a big comeback/blow a big lead to win or lose by one” thing. Well, Colorado answered the call Saturday and decimated Edmonton on its home ice, 9-1. Connor McDavid scored the lone goal, and Leon Draisaitl provided the lone assist. If that is not the most poetic box score in recent hockey memory, I’m not sure what is.
So how does Edmonton respond? Stuart Skinner is confirmed in net, and it has not been lovely for Stu at home this season, with an .869 save percentage and 3.46 GAA (and he only played half the game on Saturday). It might not get easier for him tonight when Columbus and its 34.63 shots per game on the road arrive. Conversely, the Blue Jackets allow the most shots per game in the league at 33.4, and if receiving a 9-1 beatdown doesn’t spur the Oilers offense to go nuclear, then nothing will. Jet Greaves will have his hands full. So first, let’s live by hockey betting’s golden rule: Take the Over in Edmonton. I will also throw a half unit on the puck line.
From a prop perspective, this game offers numerous options. With Ryan Nugent-Hopkins out, more responsibility will fall on the two Edmonton superstars, and it opens up opportunities for others like Andrew Mangiapane and Evan Bouchard, who skate on the same line with them. On the flip side, Columbus is no slouch when it comes to prop options with the likes of Kirill Marchenko and Zach Werenski attacking in the offensive zone. I’ll take Connor McDavid for 2+ assists at +180 and Leon Draisaitl 2+ points at +120. Putting Marchenko and Bouchard together for a point apiece lands a nice payday. Dmitri Voronkov has started the season strongly as well. And I’m going to sprinkle on Mangiapane to cash in for an anytime goal.
Pick: Over 6.5 (-120)
Lean: Oilers -1.5 (+148)
Pick: Connor McDavid 2+ Assists (+180)
Pick: Leon Draisaitl 2+ Points (+120)
Pick: Kirill Marchenko + Evan Bouchard Point Parlay (+147)
Pick: Dmitri Voronkov Over 0.5 Points (+100)
Sprinkle: Andrew Mangiapane Anytime Goal (+400)
