If you haven't heard by now, I'd like to break the news that Auston Matthews is gunning for a 70-goal season. The centerman has amassed a league-leading 68 goals. He has three remaining games to score twice. The Maple Leafs host the Red Wings tonight in an Atlantic Division clash.
I don't know whether or not Matthews will score but I expect him to be active shooting the puck. I'll take him to record at least five SOG tonight. He has racked up 342 SOG this season, fourth in the entire league. Over his last 10 games, Matthews has eclipsed this total in six of those games.
This is a great matchup for Matthews as Detroit is conceding the sixth-most 5-on-5 SOG (1,977) this season. Finally, with Toronto having a playoff spot secured, it feels like the sole focus is getting Matthews to 70 goals. I think his linemates will be feeding him all night.
While it has no playoff implications, tonight’s matchup between the Canadiens and Senators should be a good one. The Sens are seventh in the Atlantic Division with 74 points, while the Habs are right below them with 73 points.
Juraj Slafkovsky, a former first-overall pick, is really coming on in his second season in the NHL. The winger has 48 points courtesy of 19 goals and 29 helpers. He's been on fire recently, notching at least one point in 13 of his last 16 games. Over the 16-game sample size, the 20-year-old has 17 points (6G, 11A). I love this matchup for Slafkovsky considering the Senators are 28th in overall defense (3.32 GAA) and 29th on the penalty kill (75.11%). The Habs’ top winger should stay hot tonight against this lousy Senators defense.
The Predators are holding onto the top Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. They'll look to collect two easy points tonight when they host the Blue Jackets. This is the second night of a back-to-back. Nashville earned a 5-1 road win over Chicago last night.
I'm rounding out this PrizePicks Power Play with Luke Evangelista to record at least three SOG. The winger registered five SOG last night, making it three straight games where he has surpassed this total. Over those three games, he has an insane 20 SOG. Furthermore, Evangelista will likely move up to the top line with Gustav Nyquist sidelined with an injury.
Just being on the ice with Ryan O'Reilly and Filip Forsberg should provide Evangelista with some shooting opportunities. Finally, Columbus has allowed the most 5-on-5 SOG this season with 2,164. This top line should be buzzing all night. I like Evangelista to record at least three SOG.
