Today’s 2024 NBA Summer League Best Bets
Here are our top picks for today’s 2024 NBA Summer League action.
Cavaliers vs. Magic
Craig Porter Jr. helped lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a Summer League Championship last season. Now he's on the team again, looking for the same result this year. However, he admitted he's not even 100% due to an ankle injury. While it sounds like Porter Jr. will play, don't be surprised if his minutes are limited. That said, the Cavaliers still have a bonafide scorer in Emoni Bates and should get some exciting play out of DJ Burns, who will get his first professional action. On the other hand, the Magic's team will feature Anthony Black and Jett Howard. They'll also have Theo Maledon, Jarret Culver, and Charlie Borwn Jr. as other veterans on the roster. Orlando is excited about Tristan Da Silva, a rookie who added 16 points last season for Colorado. From a roster standpoint, it seems like the Magic have the deeper roster. We'll ride with them at -2.5 (-115).

Pelicans vs. Timberwolves
Many game fans thought the Minnesota Timberwolves dominated this year's NBA Draft. Now, it's time to prove it. With rookies like Rob Dillingham and Terrence Shannon Jr., the Timberwolves should have no problem scoring. Ultimately, you'd like to see more veterans on the roster, but they'll rely on Daishen Nix and Josh Minott to help lead this group with their experience. Conversely, the Pelicans don't have a single player on their roster who has played more than one year in the NBA. New Orleans is very young but has a lot of notable names, including Jordan Hawkins. They'll also have exciting rookies Yves Missi, Antonio Reeves, Kevin Obanor, and Josh Oduro. It's a fun group of names, but the lack of experience in professional basketball is tough to back, especially in the first Summer League game. Take the Pelicans at -5.5 (-115).

Kings vs. Grizzlies
The Kings and Grizzlies do battle in Las Vegas, and the game can be viewed on NBA TV and ESPN+. The Kings had two teams play in the California Classic Summer League, and they claimed the inaugural Mitch Richmond Trophy. Keon Ellis headlines the Summer League roster in Vegas for the Kings. He made 21 starts for the team last season, and he is an impressive scorer. He’ll be joined by Adonis Arms, Kenan Blackshear, Ahmad Caver, Antoine Davis, Boogie Ellis, Mason Jones, Xavier Sneed and Drew Timme, among others. Devin Carter has been ruled out for the rest of summer league with left shoulder surgery upcoming. The Grizzlies went 1-2 in three games in the Salt Lake City Summer League, scoring 86.3 PPG, while allowing 87.3 PPG. We could get a higher-scoring game in Vegas between these Western Conference foes, and going high on the total is the play.

Rockets vs. Lakers
The Lakers should have an advantage, having played a few summer league games in the California Classic. But it is hard to say that with a straight face because the Lakers did not look good. Dalton Knecht and Bronny James had some moments, but they also looked like the rookies they are. James has already missed time with an injury but should play. Houston will have some solid young talent on the roster, including this year's No. 3 pick, Reed Sheppard, and Cam Whitmore (2023 first-round pick). We already know not to expect much from the Lakers, but there is no telling what we'll get from the Rockets until the game starts. So, from what we know about the Lakers and don't know about Houston, we do not see the score being very high in this one.

Nets vs. Pacers
Brooklyn may have an edge in this game for two reasons: (1) one of the assistant coaches, Steve Hetzel, is acting as the head coach, and (2) the roster is led by a trio of players (Noah Clowney, Jalen Wilson, and Dariq Whitehead) with a lot of experience playing together already (68 games from last season). Indiana also has an assistant coach acting as the Summer League coach, Jannerno Pargo. While they, too, will have several returning players, the Pacers will try to see what they have in their rookies: Enrique Freeman, Johnny Furphy, and Tristen Newton. Since neither team has played a summer league game yet, we don't know what we have in them. But the talent level and upside favor the Pacers.

Hawks vs. Wizards
On day one of the Las Vegas Summer League we get a matchup between the top two picks of the NBA Draft. Zaccharie Risacher leads the Hawks squad along with Kobe Bufkin. Mouhamed Gueye has 6 games of NBA experience and Dylan Windler is a veteran but only has 20 games for four different squads over the last two seasons. Outside of this, there is a lot of unknown on this roster. Washington, on the other hand, has some exciting names, headlined by Alex Sarr. Johnny Davis, Jared Butler, Patrick Baldwin and Eugene Omoruyi all have significant NBA experience for this team. Risacher gained a lot of steam in the Spring to become the top pick in the draft but Alex Sarr was considered by many to be the best prospect. Throw in the fact that the Wizards have extensive NBA experience on the roster and I like Washington to win this highly anticipated matchup.

Nuggets vs. Clippers
The Nuggets and Clippers play their first games of the Summer League, as they didn’t appear in California, Florida or Utah. The Nuggets will feature plenty of talent, including former Gonzaga standout Julian Strawther, as well as DaRon Holmes II and PJ Hall. The Clippers didn’t have a lot of draft picks, but they still have a solid young roster with the likes of Kobe Brown, Cam Christie, Moussa Diabate, EJ Harkless and Jordan Miller. However, the Nuggets are a little deeper with plenty of talent from the college ranks ready to make a name for themselves in the NBA, and this is a side which could make plenty of noise in Las Vegas during this summer tournament. Watch out. Lay the little bit of points with Denver, and feel confidently in doing so.
