(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Fluminense (+425) vs. Borussia Dortmund (-150), DRAW (+295) | O/U 2.5 (-115/-110)
The action gets started early, with a matinee Group F showdown between Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund. Kickoff is set for noon ET from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
Germany's Borussia Dortmund is a household name in the sports world, but I think they could be on upset alert as they make the trip across the pond to take on Fluminense in their tournament-opening game. The BVB weren't overpowering in the Bundesliga this season, going 17-6-11 and finishing in fourth place.
Factoring in the travel and the fact that Borussia Dortmund has been idle since May 17th, I think it could open up the door for some chaos. Meanwhile, Brazilian Serie A squad Fluminense has won its last four matches outright, including posting back-to-back clean sheets.
Fluminense ranks third in their league in expected goals against (xGA) with a mark of 9.5 across 11 matches, so if the defense can hold up, the "Big Flu" should manage to keep this game within reach. I'll take Fluminense +0.5 (+120) and hope they can pull off a draw.
Bet: Fluminense +0.5 (+120)
River Plate (-190) vs. Urawa Red Diamonds (+550), DRAW (+330) | O/U 2.5 (-115/-115)
The four-game slate continues with the Group E opener, which pits River Plate against the Uwara Red Diamonds out west. This contest gets underway at 3:00 p.m. ET from Lumen Field in Seattle, WA.
Argentina's River Plate has been rolling, as they haven't lost a match since March. During that stretch, "Los Millonarios" are on an excellent 9-8-0 run over the 17-match sample size. Their defense has been lights out, conceding only 14 tallies in the 17 matches.
Even with the recent string of success, River Plate hasn't racked up a huge goal differential. They've posted a +19 goal differential over the 17 games. I'm a bit hesitant to lay a full goal on the spread (-1.0 at -125 odds) here. Even though it comes with a hefty price tag, I think the best way to play this match is to back River Plate to win outright. They'll take on a Urawa side that's just 1-2-1 in its last four matches. They've allowed 20 goals in 21 domestic matches this year, so River Plate should manage a couple of goals here.
Bet: River Plate Moneyline (-190)
Ulsan Hyundai (+330) vs. Mamelodi Sundowns (-105), DRAW (+240) | O/U 2.5 (+115/-145)
The day continues with another Group F clash, as Ulsan Hyundai gears up to take on the Mamelodi Sundowns in the southeast. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. ET from Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, FL.
The Mamelodi Sundowns have been an absolute wagon in the South African Premier Division, going 25-1-3 across 29 games. They've out-scored their opponents by 53 goals (67 to 14) and are averaging 2.3 goals per contest.
Will they hold up as they step up in competition against some of the world's best clubs? Well, I don't know. But I think that's a question for another day, as Korea's Ulsan Hyundai aren't necessarily considered a high-powered squad on the world stage.
I'll take the Sundowns to secure the win at -105 odds. Ulsan Hyundai is a modest 8-5-6 back home in the K League 1, and they're also just 1-2-1 in their last four domestic matches. Let's back the South African juggernaut to lock up three points this evening.
Bet: Mamelodi Sundowns Moneyline (-105)
Monterrey (+425) vs. Inter Milan (-175), DRAW (+340) | O/U 2.5 (-155/+125)
The night concludes with another West Coast contest in Group E, as Monterrey takes on Inter Milan in a highly anticipated showdown. The nightcap is set for 9:00 p.m. ET from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.
Internazionale is set to take the pitch for the first time since that 5-0 shellacking they took against Paris Saint-Germain at the end of May in the UEFA Champions League Final. The Italian side's defense was a bit of a liability down the stretch, and you could say that it cost them titles in both the Champions League and back home in the Italian Serie A. Over their last seven matches in all competitions, Inter is allowing 1.9 goals per match.
Now they're tasked with trying to slow down a Monterrey club that boasts a top-tier offense. At home in the Liga MX, the "Striped-Ones" are fourth in both scoring (1.7 goals per game) and expected goals against per game (1.6). Defensively, the Mexican side is allowing 1.2 goals per match domestically. The Rose Bowl should be packed with Monterrey faithful, which could help boost their offensive production against Inter Milan. All things considered, I think we will see this match end 2-1 or 2-2. I'll take the over.
Bet: Over 2.5 Goals (-155)
