Recent Form & Racing Style

Potente is a tactical speed/stalker horse who excels at sitting just off the front pace and making a strong move turning for home. He won his debut at Santa Anita in January, followed by a win at the San Felipe Stakes (G2).

Betting Outlook

In three races, Potente has yet to finish worse than second. He won his first two races, then finished second to So Happy at the Santa Anita Derby. The two horses were neck and neck down the homestretch, but it doesn’t seem that the race is carrying much weight with oddsmakers this year. Yet, I can’t help but see the value in this horse, especially considering it’s the better of the two options trained by Bob Baffert at this year’s event. With a win, Baffert would break the record for most Kentucky Derby wins by a trainer. I’m not saying he’ll get there, but Potente was pretty strong at the end of the Santa Anita Derby despite leading for the majority of the race. With a more passive strategy early, this horse could be in the mix late. If Potente tries to win wire-to-wire, then I doubt we’ll see this horse anywhere near the leaders.
