Chief Wallabee is a versatile “presser/stalker” who stays near the lead and rallies. He finished third in the Florida Derby (G1), second in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), and first in the Maiden Special Weight.

Betting Outlook

Trainer William I. Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado team up yet again after the duo led Sovereignty to a Kentucky Derby win last year. Though Chief Wallabee has lost each of his last two races, this is one of the best sleeper picks of the Kentucky Derby. While Chief Wallabee lost to both Commandment and The Puma at the Florida Derby, if you watch the race, you’ll see that Chief Wallabee really struggled to find room at the start of the homestretch, and that made all the difference. While Commandment out-sprinted Chief Wallabee, the pace for that race was very slow, and Chief Wallabee had plenty left late. The key will be getting a clean path, which could be tough from Post 12. Still, this is my dark-horse winner pick.
