Cleveland Browns vs San Francisco 49ers NFL Sports Betting Guide

Heading into the season, the Cleveland Browns were arguably the most hyped up team in the league. However, early-season offensive struggles have them sitting at just 2-2, while the San Francisco 49ers have been looked over but sit as one of the three remaining undefeated teams. Both teams have yet to reach their full potential, but they are given the opportunity to prove they can do it on Monday Night Football this week.

Overview

Cleveland put together their best performance of the season last week, beating the Baltimore Ravens 40-25. Baker Mayfield still has not thrown for multiple touchdowns in a game this season, but running back Nick Chubb stepped up in a big way, running for 165 yards and three scores. The Cleveland offense seems to rely on Chubb’s success right now, despite having Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. at receiver. Defensively, they have been playing with a depleted secondary, but the replacements have stepped up and have played better than the starters much of the time. Facing the Niners, who are coming off a bye week, the secondary will need to step up again with the front seven ahead of them still playing strong.

The 49ers have been discounted as an undefeated team since their wins have come against the Buccaneers, Bengals, and Steelers. However, any team coming off a bye week will be tough to beat. Through three games, San Francisco has one of the best rushing attacks in the league, averaging 175 yards per game. The passing attack has yet to be fully cohesive, but they have still averaged a respectable 251.7 yards per game. Defensively, they have held opponents to 226.3 yards passing and less than 100 rushing yards. If their front seven continues to hold strong and contains Nick Chubb, they have a great chance to remain undefeated.

Trends

  • Cleveland is 5-1 straight up in its last six games against San Francisco.
  • Cleveland is 5-1 against the spread (ATS) in its last six road games.
  • San Francisco is 0-14 in its last 14 games played in October.
  • The total has hit the under in five of San Francisco’s last seven home games.
  • The Browns lead the all-time series against the 49ers, 12-7.
  • Last Meeting: December 13, 2015 — The Browns defeated the 49ers, 24-10, at home in Cleveland.

Prop Bet

All odds taken from FanDuel Sportsbook.

Total Touchdowns Second Half: Over 2.5 (-114)
The 49ers have been a second-half team this season, averaging 2.7 touchdowns in the second half of games. Cleveland has been much slower in second halves, but they still average 1.75 second-half touchdowns. You either believe the Niners are legit or you don’t, but either way, it’s an argument for this prop hitting.

Bottom Line

This has been the pick giving me the most troubles this week. I think the spread ultimately is perfect, with the game expecting to hover right around that mark. The deciding factor for me came down to quarterback play which, again, hasn’t been great on either side. However, I trust Jimmy G more than Baker Mayfield in this spot. Both players are turning the football over, but Garoppolo has completed a higher percentage of passes. I also trust Kyle Shanahan to come up with a game plan in two weeks that is better than what Freddie Kitchens can do in one week. We haven’t seen George Kittle fully unleashed yet this season. This could be the spot where he wins his team the game in prime time.

Pick: San Francisco 49ers -4
