Oregon Ducks (+152) vs. Indiana Hoosiers (-180) | O/U 48.5 (-110/-110)
The Ducks (13-1) and the Hoosiers (14-0) meet in the CFP semi-final at the Peach Bowl in a rematch from the regular season.
Oregon hosted Indiana at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, and Indiana surprised the Ducks 30-20 as a 6.5-point underdog, as the under (51.5) held on.
It was a seesaw battle in the first half. Indiana led 3-0, Oregon went up 7-3, Indiana took back the lead 10-7, Oregon tied it 10-10 and Indiana hit a 58-yard field goal from Brendan Franke at the buzzer to make it 13-10 going into the half.
In the second half, Oregon tied it midway, as Atticus Sappington made it 13-13. However, Indiana running back Roman Hemby posted a two-yard touchdown run to make it 20-13. Defensive back Brandon Finney Jr. picked off Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza early in the fourth quarter, returning it 35 yards to make it 20-20. However, Mendoze was able to recover, hitting wideout Elijah Sarratt on an eight-yard go-ahead strike with 6:23 left, making it 27-20, and the Hoosiers tacked on an insurance field goal for the final score.
Oregon had two turnovers, to the one big pick-six for Indiana. The Hoosiers had 23 first downs, with Oregon mustering just 14, and the Hoosiers held a 326-to-267 total yards margin. As usual, the defense locked it down for Indiana when it mattered most, with the Hoosiers limiting the Ducks to just 13 offensive points.
Since that loss, Oregon won eight in a row, while it covered four of the final six regular-season games, and split its two CFP games. It was routing James Madison in the first round, but the Ducks scored garbage time points for the backdoor cover in the 51-34 win as the over (47.5) cashed. The Ducks were much more crisp in the quarter-finals in the Orange Bowl, posting a 23-0 win over No. 5 seed Texas Tech, limiting the Red Raiders to 215 total yards and 10 first downs, while Oregon was a +3 in turnover margin. If it can bring that type of defensive effort in the rematch, things might go another way.
However, Indiana was pretty dominant in its quarter-finals game, too. It pounded Alabama 38-3 - a sentence still too surreal to type. The Hoosiers routed the Crimson Tide of the SEC? Is this a dream?
Mendoza didn’t put up eye-popping numbers against Alabama, but he didn’t have to. He completed 14-of-16 passes for just 192 yards, although he had three touchdown strikes and zero interceptions. Running Back Kaelon Black led the way with 99 rushing yards and a score, and Hemby had 89 yards on the ground with a score. Wide receiver Charlie Becker was the top option in the receiving game with two grabs for 51 yards and a score, with Omar Cooper Jr. posting 45 receiving yards and a touchdown and Sarratt adding 40 yards and a score.
The Ducks are playing much better lately, but travel is a concern for me. They just flew cross-country to Miami last week, and now go back to Atlanta for this one. That can take a lot out of you. Indiana did go to Pasadena last week, but it’s a much quicker trip from Bloomington to Atlanta. Advantage Indiana.
For the total, we’ll go low. We saw just 50 total points in the first game, and we had the pick-six. We should see a much better defensive showing from both sides here, with points at more of a premium.
Picks: Indiana -3.5 (-112) & Under 48.5 Points (-110)
*Note: Playing a seven-point teaser, catching Oregon +10.5 (-265) and under 55.5 points (-350) is a decent alternative at (-114).
