College Football Week 8 Bets & Picks

(Odds and lines via BettingPros’ consensus betting information)

Let’s dive into our top college football picks and leans for Week 8.

    Indiana vs. Michigan

This is one of the larger edges shown toward a favorite this week, and Michigan's issues lie with its offense. The Wolverines have the No. 1 pass-blocking offensive line according to PFF, but their passing grade ranks 107th, leading to a switch to Tommy Carr as the starter for this game. The offensive line has also paved the way well in the run game, earning the 23rd-highest run-blocking grade. However, Michigan's rushing grade ranks 109th, and the Wolverines are 84th in rushing yards per game (147.7).

Carr might improve what has been the 106th-ranked scoring offense (22.7 PPG), but asking him to do so against Indiana in his first start might be a bit too much. The Hoosiers face an uphill battle against a strong Michigan defense, but the highest-scoring offense the Wolverines have faced this season is Iowa (61st, 31 PPG).

Indiana is a miserable 1-6 ATS this season. The Hoosiers' first three ATS losses came when they failed to cover spreads of at least 40.5 points. Their other ATS losses included the windy game at Nebraska, the game in which Nick Marsh stepped out of bounds, and a truly disappointing result against Northwestern at home. The Hoosiers' defense remains stout, with the 23 points allowed to Northwestern still standing as its season high. QB Josh Hoover isn't a Heisman contender, but he's turned the ball over only once, and Indiana has just three turnovers as a team (tied for fifth).

Indiana might struggle to move the ball and score, but Michigan is in a much worse spot offensively, even at home. Lay the points and expect a better day for Indiana.

    Pick: Indiana (-7)

    Alabama vs. Texas A&M

Where does A&M rank among SEC defenses? Alabama's offense was on absolute fire through the first five weeks, averaging 49.6 points per game, before scoring a combined 27 points against Georgia and at Tennessee. Injuries have hit Alabama: WR Ryan Coleman-Williams and starting IDL Terrance Green remain out. C Racin Delgatty is questionable after missing last week, as are CB Zabien Brown, IDL Fatutoa Henry, and RB EJ Crowell.

The numbers don't favor Texas A&M's defense taking advantage of Alabama's offensive issues: The Aggies rank 69th in pass-rush grade, 83rd in coverage grade, and 50th in run-defense grade. They have also faced an offense like Alabama's only once this season, against LSU, and allowed 35 points. If Alabama reaches that 35-point total, we'll need only the Aggies' SEC scoring average of 17 points to push this over (Texas A&M's team total at Alabama is 17.5).

The Tide will want to build confidence on offense and regain the confidence of the voters heading into their bye week before the LSU game. Expect Keelon Russell and company to keep their foot on the gas after two straight losses.

    Pick: OVER 49.5

    Houston vs. Utah

The second half has been a big problem for Utah. The Iowa State game was an early example: The Utes led 24-3 at halftime but won 31-17. Then, against Colorado, Utah allowed 24 second-half points after taking a 13-0 lead into halftime. The Utes had to fend off an onside kick with 1:21 left to secure the win.

These teams are a combined 9-4 to the over this season, with the four unders attributed to opponents failing to score much: Arkansas scored 10 points and Utah State scored none against Utah, while UCF scored 17 and Kansas State scored 16 against Houston. That scenario is unlikely to play out here, with both offenses ranked in the top 12 in scoring: Houston is 12th at 39.3 points per game, and Utah is eighth at 40.2.

Luckily for the Utes, Houston has been awful defensively in the second half, ranking 102nd with 15 points allowed per game after halftime. The Cougars allowed 29 second-half points against Oklahoma State. Houston will give up points, but the Cougars have also proven themselves in a tougher road spot against Texas Tech, scoring 26 points and totaling 458 yards.

Wiegman and Dampier both rank in the top 15 in passing grade and have a combined 36:6 touchdown-to-interception ratio. They're joined by fellow standout Wayshawn Parker, Utah's running back, who is the third-highest-graded skill-position player behind Malachi Toney and Jeremiah Smith. This pick fades the public but favors the strongest side of both teams.

    Pick: OVER 57.5

    Arizona vs. Iowa State

Arizona has been great this season, especially through the air, ranking 10th in passing yards per game (306.7). Iowa State is middling against the pass, ranking 53rd in passing yards allowed per game, 79th in coverage grade, and 60th in pass-rush grade. Iowa State runs the ball well, and West Virginia gashed the Wildcats for 303 rushing yards and 31 points. Luckily for Arizona, WVU's defense is so bad that the Wildcats put up 482 yards and 52 points in only 24:10 of possession, with just one defensive score.

Iowa State's three games that went under the total came when the Cyclones held FCS opponent SEMO to only 10 points and struggled to score against Iowa (13) and at BYU (10). Arizona's unders have been similar: The Wildcats held NAU to seven points in Week 1, scored only 17 points at BYU, and held Cincinnati to seven points.

With Arizona struggling against a strong running game, Iowa State running at the 32nd-highest rate, and both teams averaging 35.6 points per game, the over looks very achievable as Noah Fifita heads into his 41st career start.

    Pick: OVER 49.5
