College Football Power Rankings: Week 6 (2025)

College Football Power Rankings: Week 9 (2025)

Week 5 in college football was arguably one of the best weekends in terms of parity and competition. The Oregon Ducks took down Penn State on the road in double overtime to remain undefeated, while handing the Nittany Lions their first loss of the season.

Other overtime games included Virginia’s win over No. 8 Florida State on Friday night, Tennessee’s road win against Mississippi State, and Georgia Tech’s one-point win against Wake Forest to stay unbeaten. Alabama held off Georgia for its first big win in 2025, while Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels beat No. 4 LSU for a statement win at home.

I’ve made some big additions to the bottom half of my Week 6 power rankings. Follow me on X at Matt_MacKay_ for more weekly college football betting analysis and free picks.

                            1. Ohio State

Ohio State played its first road game against an undefeated Washington Huskies offense that is still ranked 13th in the nation for points scored per game. The Buckeyes’ stout defense, ranked first in the country allowing a stingy 5.5 points per game, held the Huskies’ high-octane offense to six points, surrendering only two field goals.

Led by QB Julian Sayin, WR Jeremiah Smith and a committee of running backs on offense, Ohio State hasn’t skipped a beat since winning the National Championship last year. Until they lose, the Buckeyes deserve to be ranked No. 1 in the country.

                            2. Miami (FL)

Carson Beck and the Miami Hurricanes were on bye in Week 5. Miami is gearing up for another massive home game at Hard Rock Stadium this weekend against No. 18 Florida State.

Perhaps the most surprising metric for the Hurricanes in 2025 is how well their defense has played. Miami ranks ninth in the nation in opponent points per game at 11.5. Their Week 1 win over Notre Dame is beginning to look even more impressive and they’ve played two different styles of football to beat USF and Florida ahead of their upcoming top-20 matchup against the Seminoles.

                            3. Oregon

Head coach Dan Lanning remains one of the best motivators and playcallers in college football. The Ducks marched into Beaver Stadium and overcame a slow start, then held off Penn State’s late surge, outscoring the Nittany Lions in double overtime.

QB Dante Moore was highly effective with his legs and arm, extending plays via dual-threat ability. Oregon’s offense amassed over 400 yards of offense, while the Ducks bottled up Drew Allar and Penn State’s offense, allowing only 137 passing yards.

                            4. Oklahoma

John Mateer and the undefeated Oklahoma Sooners were on bye in Week 5. Now, head coach Brent Venables’ team is preparing for their final non-conference game in a favorable matchup against Kent State.

The Sooners have key wins over Michigan and Auburn, while sitting third in the nation for opponent points allowed per game. Oklahoma’s elite defense, paired with Mateer’s versatility as the program’s new signal-caller, has made them an early contender to win the College Football Playoff.

                            5. Ole Miss

Ole Miss QB1 Trinidad Chambliss and the Rebels’ offense threw for over 300 yards, while the defense held LSU under 60 total rushing yards in a gritty win at home over the Tigers. I’ve never been a big believer in LSU but Ole Miss’ ability to erase an early deficit and dominate at the line of scrimmage is worth moving several spots in the power rankings.

Now, the Rebels go into their bye week with a ton of confidence and momentum, ranked 14th in the nation for points scored per game (40.6) this season. Washington State is a soft matchup to ease Ole Miss back into action, before a brutal stretch of back-to-back road games against No. 12 Georgia and No. 5 Oklahoma.

                            6. Indiana

Head coach Curt Cignetti and QB Fernando Mendoza led the Indiana Hoosiers to a 5-0 record with a 20-15 road win against Iowa in Week 5. Indiana had to battle back from a second half deficit, including a 49-yard go-ahead touchdown to wideout Elijah Sarratt with under 90 seconds to go.

The Hoosiers won the turnover battle and held Iowa under 300 total yards of offense, including one total touchdown. Indiana’s defense is a top-five unit, allowing 9.6 points per game, while its scoring offense under Mendoza is also ranked inside the top-ten.

Back-to-back wins over Illinois and Iowa have proved that this year’s Indiana is a better version than last year. The Hoosiers go into a Week 6 bye to prepare for a huge Week 7 tilt on the road against No. 2 Oregon.

                            7. Texas A&M

Texas A&M has been flying under the radar with a perfect 4-0 record. The Aggies held Auburn under 180 yards of offense, including 52 total rushing yards, an impressive feat against a run-centric opponent.

The road win against Notre Dame is starting to look really good on Texas A&M’s resume. QB Marcel Reed has a 4:1 touchdown to interception ratio, while RB Le’Veon Moss leads the Aggies with 307 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

Mike Elko’s undefeated program will host a plucky Mississippi State team in prime-time for Week 6.

                            8. Alabama

Alabama answered the bell by going on the road and beating the previously top-five ranked Georgia Bulldogs in Week 5. Head coach Kalen DeBoer has felt the pressure since the Crimson Tide lost to Florida State in Week 1, so beating Kirby Smart for a huge SEC win had to feel good.

QB Ty Simpson now has 11 touchdown passes, zero interceptions, and over 1,100 passing yards in four games. Alabama’s defense has tightened up as well, holding the Bulldogs’ passing attack to 130 yards and forcing the game’s only turnover.

The Crimson Tide will need to focus on hosting No. 16 Vanderbilt in Week 6. The Commodores rank fourth in the nation for points scored per game, giving Alabama’s defense another difficult test.

                            9. Iowa State

The Big 12 doesn’t get as much shine as the other three Power 4 conferences this season but Iowa State’s 5-0 start deserves to be recognized. The Cyclones played Week 0 and shut down Kansas State’s rushing attack to start 1-0.

Since the win in Ireland, Iowa State has held four straight opponents under 20 points. The Cyclones’ defense under head coach Matt Campbell ranks 18th in the country, while QB Rocco Becht has a 65 percent completion rate.

Key wins include Kansas State and Iowa, while dominating a good Arizona offense 39-14 in Week 5. A tough road trip against Cincinnati awaits in Week 6.

                            10. Tennessee

Tennessee made a late push on the road to beat Mississippi State in overtime during Week 5. QB Joey Aguilar has been a big upgrade from Nico Iamaleava in head coach Josh Heupel’s offense, leading the Volunteers to average 51 points per game, ranked third amongst 134 FBS teams.

Defense has regressed, allowing nearly 30 points per game, mostly against Georgia and Mississippi State. However, with Aguilar averaging nearly 300 passing yards per game, the offense is potent enough to overcome defensive inefficiency.

The Volunteers head into a Week 6 bye with a 4-1 record. Then, it’s a favorable matchup against a reeling Arkansas defense in Week 7, before a road trip to Tuscaloosa to face No. 10 Alabama.
