MLB Home Run Props & Picks: Wednesday (8/19)

MLB Home Run Props & Picks: Wednesday (8/19)

We’ve already seen some historic things happen from an MLB home run props perspective this week. Pete Crow-Armstrong on Monday became the sixth player in MLB history with a leadoff and walkoff HR in the same game. In the process, he joined Sammy Sosa as the only Cubs players with multiple 30/30 seasons.

Instead of riding with Crow-Armstrong again and backing his momentum with homers in three consecutive games, one of my three home run picks today supports the other NL MVP candidate that Crow-Armstrong is neck-and-neck with in the voting.

Here are my top MLB home run props for Wednesday’s slate.

      Matt Olson (+326)

Matt Olson entered yesterday leading all MLB hitters with 67 extra-base hits. By comparison, NL and AL MVP candidates Pete Crow-Armstrong (62) and Yordan Alvarez (61) were the only other players who totaled more than 59 extra-base hits in that span.

Olson has 36 home runs, and became the 14th active player with at least five seasons of 30-plus homers. Only Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber have hit more home runs than him since 2017. He was also the only player with double-digit homers since July 24 entering yesterday.

Taj Bradley has allowed multiple home runs twice in his last seven starts. And Olson is on the best split to go yard off him, as 14 of Bradley’s 19 long balls allowed have been to left-handed batters.

        Jac Caglianone (+630)

Bobby Witt Jr. homered in consecutive games and is now batting .340 with a .964 OPS in August. But teammate Jac Caglianone has been on a more torrid pace at the plate over a larger sample size. That makes him the most coveted Royals slugger to go yard and take advantage of an MLB-worst Athletics pitching staff.

Caglianone entered yesterday batting .403 with six home runs, 10 extra-base hits, and 23 RBI in his last 18 games (he hit safely in 16 of 18). He faces an Athletics pitching staff that has a collective MLB-worst 5.87 ERA over the last month, while also ranking 28th in HR/FB rate and 29th in HR/9 rate.

        Shohei Ohtani (+208)

Not to be outdone by his stiffest competition for the NL MVP Award on Monday, Shohei Ohtani matched Pete Crow-Armstrong with two home runs. That was his second multi-HR game this year, both of which happened this month. All he did for an encore yesterday was belt his 30th home run, guaranteeing his sixth straight 30-home run season.

Entering yesterday, Ohtani’s 1.226 OPS was the highest career OPS by any player against the Rockies franchise (min. 200 PA). And through 25 career games at Coors Field, Ohtani slashed .398/.459/.786 with nine home runs and 19 total extra-base hits.

Ohtani has owned his head-to-head matchups with Rockies southpaw Kyle Freeland. In 16 career at-bats, he has a 1.799 OPS, with four of his nine hits going for extra-bases, including three home runs.
