Milwaukee Brewers (-132) at Texas Rangers (+112)

Starting Pitchers: Freddy Peralta vs. Merrill Kelly

The Rangers will aim to complete a sweep of the Brewers at Globe Life Field on Wednesday. Merrill Kelly (11-7, 3.16 ERA) will toe the slab for Texas, while Freddy Peralta (16-5, 2.50 ERA) draws the nod for Milwaukee. These are two valuable squads in the NRFI department. There have been zeroes on the scoreboard at the end of the first inning in 45 of the Rangers’ 74 home games and 46 of the Brewers’ 83 games as a betting favorite.

Talk about stepping up at a crucial point. Kelly has been stellar over his past five starts, logging a 2.23 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. Four of those five outings kicked off with an unblemished opening frame. Take note that the veteran right-hander has limited this Milwaukee roster to a .128/.212/.170 slash line in 47 at-bats. The Brewers also enter this series finale ranked 26th in first-inning OPS (.703). Trust Kelly to exploit an outstanding matchup.

The case for backing Peralta mirrors that of Kelly. The Dominican ace is currently riding a 29-inning scoreless streak and has surrendered just 10 hits in that span. Peralta sports a spectacular 1.86 first-inning ERA on the year and will confront an offense that has struggled in the early goings. Texas is a bottom-five unit in batting average (.230), on-base percentage (.304) and extra-base knocks (38) during the first inning in 2025.

Pick: NRFI (-142)

New York Mets (+144) at Philadelphia Phillies (-172)

Starting Pitchers: Clay Holmes vs. Cristopher Sanchez

The Phillies will have a chance to strengthen their lead in the National League East when they battle the Mets on Wednesday night. Philadelphia’s Cristopher Sanchez (12-5, 2.60 ERA) and New York’s Clay Holmes (11-7, 3.61 ERA) will be on the mound at Citizens Bank Park. Don’t expect immediate runs in this divisional clash. After all, Sanchez and Holmes have combined to fire a scoreless first inning in a ridiculous 45 of their 56 starts this campaign.

Soft contact serves as the core of Sanchez’s excellence. The crafty southpaw is inducing ground balls at the fifth-highest rate in the league (58.3%) and holding hitters to a minuscule 5.6% barrel rate. That is a perfect skill set to pair with a Phillies’ defense that has committed the third-fewest errors in baseball (54). The Mets come to town averaging the third-fewest first-inning runs per road contest. Expect Sanchez to gather three outs with ease.

Holmes was targeted in this article last week before he shut down the Tigers in a clean opening frame. The 32-year-old hurler lowered his career first-inning ERA to 3.09 in the process. An ability to get out of trouble is crucial when facing a powerful lineup like Philly. Holmes has showcased that ability this summer, holding opponents to a .202 batting average with runners in scoring position. That is a top-12 mark among qualified arms.

Pick: NRFI (-125)
